School is Not Supposed to Hurt: Investigative Report on Abusive Restraint and Seclusion in Schools

This report was made public January 13, 2009, at a press conference in Washington, DC. It is a wholly chilling condemnation of the use of seclusion and restraint in special education.

If you have any stories that would be helpful for other families of students in special education who have difficulty in their classrooms, please share them with us here.

We appreciate even more the competent, creative and kind staff and administrators our children find in their local schools where all our children can grow up in a learning environment that is welcoming, safe and respectful.

Please share what methods are effective and nurturing in your children's schools.

Thank You!

Pam W

Does this child have a diagnosis? The article did not mention one. This was such a disturbing article... it seems as though school districts are overwhelmed and not aware of or disregarding the supports and 'best practices' that can create better opportunities for students, increase safety and build a healthier learning environment. On the whole, administrators, staff, parents and students are facing challenges that contribute to these unfortunate situations and devastating consequences.

LARGO, Fla. Police this week removed an unruly 7-year-old from his classroom and forced him to be hospitalized under the state's Baker Act against the wishes of his outraged parents. ...
... Pinellas schools police report they have been involved in 83 Baker Acts from the beginning of the school year to the start of this week. That does not include any handled by other police agencies.
School Board member Peggy O'Shea said she didn't think that sounded like a large number given the 105,000 students in Pinellas schools.
School board member Janet Clark noted there were several other Baker Acts in Pinellas schools that day. She plans to raise the issue with the superintendent. ...

Everyone needs to call their Senators & tell them to please Co-sponsor S2860 WITHOUT the added language of adding restraint & seclusion to the IEP's. This is what is being done to our children at school, This must stop! There is a new documentary by the Massachusettes Dept. of Mental Health. Professionals & parents talk about restraints & how dangerous & unneccessary they are. Residential facilities are fazing restraints out some are 100% restraint free & the rest are on the way. My son & I are featured in the film.
