My new betta, Ignatius, is my first fish ever, and I'm totally fascinated by him. The other day, when I was trying to gently remove him from his tank for a water change - during which time he regarded me with much suspicion - I caught myself referring to myself as "mommy" to the fish; as in "Ignatius, it's just mommy! don't be afraid!" Most of my family and friends think I'm a little crazy, I think But I love watching him, and consequently commenting on his progress to others. I figure you all won't mind
He's doing splendidly well, and seems to recognize me now, looking at me through the tank when I peer in at him. His fins and tail are growing rapidly, and he's a wonderful swimmer and eater. He's real tiny, I think he's a baby. His body is much smaller then my sister's bettas. The cute thing is, when I move his tank to "visit" his cousins, regardless of the fact that they're twice the size of him, he's flared up before his tank hits the table! He's a little spit fire, that's for sure. I moved his tank closer to my bed for the night, and when I woke up this morning, he was sleeping on his silk plant. How precious is that?

lol no, we won't mind your betta talk one bit here, we're crazy about our fish too : ) and I think more than a few of us consider ourself to be 'parents'
What's going on??
I dunno. I'll ask. WhHHaaAAAAAAAATTTs GooiiiNGG OooON?!
What's he saying?
This one's a little trickier... He's either saying, 'it's time to move to the back of the throat' or, he wants a strawberry float.

I just added a new silk plant to his tank. He's currently swimminging around it excitedly and sniffing it. It's a quarter after twelve, I have to go to work in the morning, and yet I'm reading Betta message boards while laughing at Ignatius' antics. It's a fun life being a betta parent

I think most of us here, if not all of us, think of ourselves as parents to these fish. I know I feel this way about all my pets, as I do not yet have children, so these are my children.

Tiffanyrae,
I drive my coworkers and family nuts with my photos and constant discussion of my bettas.
They are adorable, beautiful and obviously very smart fish! I started with one, then two, now there are 5 in the house. I have 2 boys and 2 girls, my son has a red boy. I have to fight not to buy more when I see them in the little cups with yucky water at the store.

I feel in love with a pure pearly white girl at the petstore the other day. My husband as with me though, so needless to say, she is still at the store. If I was alone......

ooo, you should sneak back in and get her. I have two pearly white girls and they are just as beautiful as my big flowy boys.
Tiffany, we know we talk about our fish too much - but it's a pretty harmless obsession that makes us and our pets happy.

it's also intersting how different everyone's 'babies' are - like Nan's fish are kinder to each other than bettas are wont to be. And we all worried about jax's stupid gill, and how the orange fry is coming along.

Yeah, I really should go back and get her. I never saw anything like it before.
And how is that Orange Fry looking?
