I was really gutted to read the news that Spider-man 4 & director Sam Raimi have been scrapped, along with the enitre Spidey cast.
The new director is '(500) Days Of Summer' Marc Webb (get it) will be taking over - to take the entire thing back to high school. I love Webb's work, and I'm sure he'll do a great job, but it is a little worrying, especially considering the Raimi movies only started about 10 years ago.
Apparently, Zac Efron is lead to play Peter. The budget is going to be $80 million, which is low for this kinda movie. Spidey 3 was $240 million. Plus, I liked Dunst, Maguire and the rest.
I'm really surprised - what do other Spidey fans think? Good or bad?

Very bad!!! im still disappointed by the news, even though 3 wasnt the best, i loved the idea of them keeping the story moving but now that they're rebooting, its gonna start all over!!! why oh why would they want to start all over if we already knows his stories has a teenager? although i love the idea of marc webb directing. thats my opinion

I love the idea of Marc Webb directing too, I just wonder if the action scenes will suffer because of the teen angst plot. I love Spidey though & I'm sure Marvel will be on top of their number one seller looking good. Shame to lose the cast and Raimi though frown

I heard that one problem with keeping the original cast was that Maguire now costs too much.

I hope they at least put Gwen Stacey in this one along with Mary Jane Watson and they better put Flash (Peter's high school nemesis) in as well.

I don't care much for Zac Efron as an actor but I will keep an open mind.

I think Zac is too good looking to play Peter LOL, I like his acting though & I'm sure they could geek him up, after all, if Pete dates models and actresses he would have to be buff, plus the muscles from actually being Spidey would be there. Efron's out of the race, apparently, they're going for unknowns. I hope they don't Twilight it at all - that would suck. I hope Gwen Stacy is in it way more than MJ, all the original characters like Flash and Harry, Betty, etc. would be fun - and that they represent the characters how they were in the comics properly. I did like Tobey as Spidey but nevermind, as long as it's not like Ultimate Spider-man - that's too twisted and too young teenage, though I prefer Pete with Gwen smile

Gee, Steve - we would have never guessed that you preferred Gwen, LOL! laugh

I think if they are going to redo this thing completely, coming in with "unknowns" is a good idea. that way people don't have preconcievd notions about the actors. Everyone would have kept waiting for efron to start singin and dancing! (Although I did love him in "17 Again", he proved he was more than a Disney actor).

But "Spiderman 3" was atrocious. I don't know who to blame for that film - writers? There was really no way to go back and recapture anything from that trainwreck. They slammed too many doors.

I completley disagree with you on Spidey 3 Michelle, I think everyone was way too hard on that movie. I really enjoyed it, and I honestly didn't get the huge fuss over slagging it off so much - that's the reason they're re-booting it probably. The only thing I didn't like was the fact they made Sandman the killer of Uncle Ben, plus Pete would never have forgiven him. The fans begged to have Venom in the movie & they got it, then all they did was moan - to me Venom's an annoying character with way too much hype around him. I think if they'd have concentrated on one villain it would've been better, but in all honesty - I don't see ppl's problem with that movie at all.

You're right - they had too many villains. There was too much plot to focus on in one movie.

But they killed off 3 major villians - that's what I meant by closing too many doors. Plus they really didn't stick to the venom sotryline at all.

It is the same thing that went wrong with Tim Burton's vision of Batman - keep throwing in major villians and the pot gets too full to focus on any one thing.

No, no no, please say you didn't just say that Michelle smile LOL - Tim Burton's Batman movies are the best. Batman Returns is IMO the best Batman movie ever, it has so many levels and the right sense of darkness combined with graphic novel - I'm surprised you're not found of it. I think when Joel schumacher got involved with Batman and Robin - he ruined the franchise for everyone, taking it back to those camp TV shows. Still, I'd rather watch any of those Batman movies, even Batman & Robin then The Dark Knight, which I feel is way too dark and serious - I hate the new Bats movies, they take themselves far too seriously - what you think? I also love Jack, he was a much better Joker than Heath (though I love his other works)

I agree on Spidey 3 - there was too many villains, I still think that everyone was too hard on it though. I've never been a fan of the Venom storyline - so I didn't like that anyway - I just didn't think it was as bad as ppl make out, like I don't think the Dark Knight is as brilliant as everyone makes out (in fact - I hate that movie, and I adore Batman - I think a lot of ppl think they should like it, especially because Heath died at the time)

Sorry, I meant the ones after Burton left ( I just tend to think of that as "Burton's universe" as opposed to the "Dark Knight" universe. I liked the first Dark Knight movie, but it got too dark in the 2nd one, I agree.

But I was thinking of the last fiasco that was batman, robin, batgirl, Mr. Freeze, and Poison Ivy (much as I love Uma Thurman) - THAT was a "too much to handle" film!

Personally I just love all the X-films and these others are time fillers for me anyway, LOL!!!

Yeah, I completley see your point - with you on that one, it wasn't just there was too many villains either - they were all so badly done LOL. Who would've thought that George Clooney would be such a terrible Batman? And the fact that they put Arnie's name as top billing was awful on a side note LOL.

I love the first two X-Men movies, they're fantastic - I was gutted when Singer left to do Superman Returns, because I didn't like X-Men 3, there wasn't enough Mystique and what happened with the Phoenix saga?? LOL - that movie could have been gold. I loved Wolverine Origins though, so they got it back on track for me. Wolverine 2 is coming soon isn't it? Sounds good.

Sorry, I didn't like "Batman Returns" or "The Dark Knight". Those films are more Hollywood than they are Batman. Since when is there so much explosive destruction in Batman stories. I don't know who the hero was in those movies, but it wasn't Batman.

The X-Men films were not as good as they could have been. Somehow those movies became all about Wolverine and not about the other characters.

Completley disagree with you on 'Batman' & 'Batman Returns' - he was obviously the hero, there was no other way to interpret it. There's always been violence in Batman, his only thing is - he never kills - which he doesn't in either. I completley agree with you on 'The Dark Knight' - I hated it.

Superman Returns, I feel was and is, one of the weakest super hero movies ever. It concentrates far too much on Clark's relationship with Louis and the annoying child - and there are SO many plot holes it's ridiulous. Casting someone just because they look like another actor was also lame, but not as much as the "seen it all before" in the other Supes movies idea of bringing Lex boring Luther back into it. That entire movie needed some hero put in it. I mean, what actually even happaned LOL?

The first two X-Men movies were brilliant, I do feel also that they concentrate far too much on Wolverine - but he's what the fans want to see. Those movies are still superbly cunstructed. You'll never get Hollywood to match the graphic novels, but they came quite close. It depends what you're looking for in a super hero movie. I think most ppl will agree that SR was weak though - what do you like about it?

Yes, there is violence in Batman stories, but rarely is the city blown up like in Batman Returns. And since when does Batman drive a car that looks more like a tank? Sorry, I completely dislike the last two Batman films.

I wish they would do a Batman movie where he is more the Dark Knight Detective he has so often been, not some action hero with a lot of fancy toys.

Superman Returns, I liked this movie for the same reasons you did not like it. I really enjoyed the complexity of the Lois/Superman relationship. It was fascinating to watch. It made Superman more human and more vulnerable as a person.

The rescue of the space shuttle and the jet airplane was the best superhero action I have seen on film since Christopher Reeves rescue Lois Lane and the helicopter in the 1978 Superman movie.

The one thing I did not like about the movie was the weakness of Luthor's evil plot. It was so ridiculous. His new female sidekick was also a weak character too.

I also disagree about the X-Men films. They were not nearly as good as they could have been. But then I was never a big X-Men fan or even a Marvel fan for that matter.

Ironman was good. However, I didn't like Tony Stark saying "I am Ironman" at the very end of the film.

The Hellboy films are good, especially the first one.

The first Spiderman film was great. The second film was bad. I haven't seen the third film, but I have heard nothing good about the third film.

The city doesn't get blown up in Batman Returns - are you mistaking it for the last two movies?? Batman returns is the one with Catwoman and the Penguin, directed by Tim Burton in 92. I hate the last two Batman movies as well.

I'm not really into Superman, I love Supergirl - I feel they give her much more humanity, she makes mistakes etc. I wish they'd do a good Supergirl movie - I loved Kara in Smallville - I love that show anyway. I agree that the action was good in Superman Returns, but there wasn't enough. I didn't like the actress playing Louis either, she wasn't as the character should be - I felt she was too weak. Louis is strong minded, in that, she was constantly depending on the men. I hope the next one is good though as I think Bryan Singers a great directer.

Sorry I meant "Batman Begins" when the train blows up and trashes much of the city. Also, they wasted a good villain in Ras Ah Ghul. He is a better villain in the comics and not Batman's mentor.

The 1984 Supergirl movie was terrible. It could have been better, but they had to make in a teen love story. Supergirl falling in love with some masculine boy was so dumb. Helen Slater looked the part, but the script was awful. I hope some does a better movie of her. A good Wonder Woman film would be nice too. Maybe even a movie of Black Canary, Hawkgirl or some other good female hero.

Ras Ah Ghul is awesome, but I was even more gutted over their treatment of the Scarecrow - he's one of my favorite villains in Batman's universe, and I think they could have done amazing things with him. The recent movies are just like gangsta films, with Batman as a crooked cop (and why does he have to scream in that voice? I couldn't understand anything he said in the last movie. I don't like Bale as Batman at all.

Yeah, I agree - I don't think they've treated any of the female super heroes fairly with their own movies. I liked Supergirl as a kid, and the scene where she's sent to the Phantom Zone used to scare me LOL. The only one I liked was Elektra, but even that wasn't as good as it should've been. It doesn't look like the Wonder Woman movie will ever get off the ground at this rate.

I gather you're a DC fan primarily like me though LOL - I think if they did a Supergirl movie, as she was reinvented a few years back, then that would be cool - especially if she was brainwashed by DS and fighting Superman. That would be an awesome movie I think.

Yes, I am DC fan from the 1960s to the 1980s. I stopped reading comicbooks not long after the Crisis on Infinite Earths. After Crisis they eventually destroyed or rewrote all the characters I knew and loved. They weren't the same characters anymore.

My favorite heroes were the Legion of Superheroes and the Teen Titans. I also liked Superboy, Aquaman, Metal Men and many more. Unfortunately, Marvel gets all the attention. They have gotten all the attention from the media since the late 1970s. Except for Batman and Superman few people seem to care about all the great DC characters. The DC Universe has as much, if not more, to offer than the Marvel Universe.

I finally saw the first (with Tobey Maguire) aftre years of thinking it looked awful (i sometimes watch movies for this reason...was wrong a few times) and I was not mistaken about this movie being horrible! Then I watched the sequel and it was worst so I never got to watch the third. I still haven't watched the reboot but that one looks to be at least better than the last three Spiderman movies so I'll give it a shot one of these days, I may even watch the third to see if it was as awful as the previous two.
