Newspapers with vinegar and water is the method that is said to leave your windows sparkling. I think newspapers from days gone by were a bit more pliable than today's variety.

I think hosing down the windows first is helpful as well. (I presume you are talking about the outside of the windows.) I really need to do mine. I noticed cob webs are building up.

I go to the newspaper office here and they sell end rolls for about $5. I like them better than the newspaper because your hand doesn't get black. Hubby also uses it in his garden. He just rolls it out and then puts hay on top of it to keep weeds out. An added bonus is that by the time next year rolls around it has composted.

I found it is impossible to get off the "hard water" build up on the outside of windows (from sprinklers, hose rinsing, etc.) Is there a way to get rid of that film?

Maybe you could use some LemiShine...I use it in the dishwasher but I have used it before to clean hard water deposits from the sink. You have to add some water to you, but it will tell on the bottle.

Actually, vinegar should take hard water stains off but you'll need to let it sit on there for a bit--so best to do this on a cloudy day so it doesn't dry from the sun.
