the sharks will get too big for your tank size, so that's out.

the bristlenose cat is a great idea. the danio school and neon school is fine too. Danios can be nippy, so watch your betta with them.

the good thing about danios is that they are hardy enough to cycle your tank. Your platys will also be good cyclers, if you forgo the danios.

DON'T cycle with catfish or neon tetras, or loaches.

Hi Piso. Cycling is what you do to get the nitrogen levels to safe levels for your fish. You need to read up on this, it's very important for aquariums, crucial, actually. start with this good one:

The final count on my 20 gallon (long) as of today is:
-1 Comet Goldfish over 3 in. long. I love my goldfish.. she's fun to watch. Great article by Jilly on goldfish bowls, btw .
-3 Emerald Cory Cats about 1.5 in. each. Them and the goldfish seem to like each other 'cause they sit on the bottom together and play - which is good because the goldfish lost her buddy about 3 months ago and has been pretty lonely until now.
-4 Scissortail Rasboras bought in two sets of 2. I didn't know if they would get along since they were from two batches, but they seem to be pretty happy and school together now.
-2 little gold algae eaters with a black stripe.. don't know what they're called, but they were cheap at Petsmart. They like to jump out of the water and stick to the top of the glass. I hope they don't jump out. Also chase around the rasboras a bit.

Feeding includes:
-Morning and evening TetraMin Tropical Flakes. I was putting goldfish pellets in to begin with, but the goldfish won't touch them now that there are the flakes.
-Morning and evening about 4 Hikari Tropical Sinking Wafers that the cory cats and the goldfish nibble on.
-Once or twice a week Wardley Tubifex Worm cubes as a treat.

Should I do tubifex worms more often? What about lettuce or cucumber? Please advise.

Accessories are:
-1 bubble treasure chest. A must have.
-A Topfin 30 biofilter at full tilt. The cory cats and rasboras like the current.
-A faux tree root system for hiding and 4 plastic plants.
-Seachem Amonia Alert dial.
-No hood, but a metal light case with a 150 watt energy efficient light that doesn't heat up much.

Pictures will come later. I know it seems a bit crowded right now, but in 2 months when I move, I'll be setting up a 55 gallon and a few 10s, so there will be room to grow.

Comments welcome. The tank seems to be doing well and keeping pretty clean. Thank you for bearing with my long post. I know I'm a dork.

You're no more a dork than the rest of us birney! good to have you back.

you are feeding about right on the worms, nice treat. lettuce in a clip is needed for goldfish, who thrive on greens. Spinach is good too.

normally I don't mix goldies with tropicals, but if they are the hardy ones, like comets, commons or even fantails, this can work fine. The fancy ones definately do not mix, IMO, for a bunch of reasons.

Also, watch those algae eaters - they can become downright mean or even killers when they get bigger. those might be a good candidate for the 10 gallon when you move everyone else to the 55. Also, goldfish are best in the biggest tanks possible, so they should go inthe 55.

I have to keep going back to see if I forgot anything. Cukes are good. Fasten chunks to a small rock with a rubber band. Remove uneaten parts before nightfall, so it won't foul the water. :rolling:

Wow...been awhile since anyone posted on THIS thread!

Well, I'm putting together a community tank. It's a 20 gallon long..but after all the gravel and "stuff" I put in there there's only about 15 gallons of water in it.

I have brownish red gravel in the bottom and some neat cave/cliff house and a waterfall like cliff thingy..it has one of those bubblers with the clear plastic that makes it look like a stream..real pretty. I picked up one of those biowheel power filters for it too. Of course AFTER I put all that stuff in and filled it up I decided that I needed to put down some substrata..(how's that for thinking things out first! ) SOOOoo....I carefully moved the gravel and 'stuff' over out of the way and put in some seriously rinsed off florite under the gravel in the areas where I put the live plants. Don't know if that will be good enough or not..just have to wait and see how the plants do.

My daughter and I have been looking online and in the fish stores for some possible tank buddies. We both decided that we like the long fin danios...there are many types to pick from..blue, zebra, gold, leopard...etc. Will do some research and see if they will be right for that tank. Will also need an algea eater..that will be difficult as they are all so large....and I would like a couple of the dwarf gouramis too, but don't know if I'll have the room for them.

This is fun!

I also have a 15 gallon under this 20...that I am setting up for my female bettas to live in..but I'll write about that one later...

If plecs (algae eater) getting too large are worrisome to you try corodoras (sp? - we call them cory cats), loaches (look like eels bout 2" long - ours were indisputably ALWAYS called monty =]), or just get a plec that already is quite small, most fish will only grow as big as the tank will let them. I've had one for a few years now (3 or 4 maybe) and hes only bout 3".
Danios are quite feisty and stick to the top of the tank. I wouldn't suggest sluggish fish like novelty goldfish or bettas with them as they nippy. I usually had some variation of swords/platys with tiger barbs, tetras, danios, and these fish called 'Austrailian rainbow fish' those I've seen get to be about 5"+ but have a main body of silver with irridescent strips along the midline.
Good luck =]
