Yes hearing aids do not suit everyone - I wore in the ear aids from childhood till the late 1990s (I've been deaf since I was a baby) and then ear infections and otitis externa made it impossible.
For a couple of years I wore an alice band hearing aid (which looks like a headphone set and frequently got mistaken for one, causing offence at times because people thought I was listening to music whilst talking to them.
I have 70 decibel loss so wasn't suitable for cochlear implant - and then the clinic I go to started doing bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA) which is suitable for my level of loss but still requires considerable testing to make sure you have sufficient bone conduction. I now have bilateral BAHA (BAHAs on both sides) and it's great - gives me 25 decibel loss instead of 70 decibel and although it's still hearing aids which won't give completely normal hearing, the BAHAs are very much better than anything I've had before.
It does require surgery and considerable follow up by the specialist audiological and ear team but it was worth it for me!
