This may seem like a big "DUH!" question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. Does anyone know of any little rental cottages/cabins along any of the Great Lakes that don't cost an arm and a leg. I don't have the wherewithall for any kind of vacation, but daydreaming keeps me sane sometimes. I'm daydreaming of a quiet little place, not packed with weekenders and tourists, where I can just sleep next to the water and wake up and go to bed with the sound of the waves in my ears. Just been feeling a bit bone tired lately, with everything pretty much falling down around our ears. It's hard to stay positive and I haven't had a vacation in years. I don't think I could afford one even if I saved up the time. Sad, huh? What are your favorite getaways in MI? Places you go to forget the world for a while? To just listen to what the wind has to say?

Apple Blossom,

I know what you mean. I think you mentioned before that you are in Michigan, so I hope this info helps. Years ago I bought a book called Michigan Vacation Guide that listed places to stay in Michigan all around the Great Lakes from inexpensive cottages to more expensive B&B's and chalets.

My husband and I found a place in Paradise to stay called Birchwood Lodge. This was in 2003 I believe and we stayed for 4 days in a small cabin for about $250 for both of us. It wasn't the Ritz but we were right on Lake Superior.

Here is the link to a page that has the newest edition: Michigan Vacation Guide

I have the 1999 edition that is available on Amazon, but they don't seem to have the newer edition. Maybe your local library even has it if you don't want to order it from the site above.

And thanks for reminding me of the this book. I think I will order the new one to review for the site. Keep dreaming. I'm sure you will find a place for you. smile

I did some quick internet searches, but didn't come up with much. I will keep trying though as I know there are plenty of people who have the same question you do.

Just a couple more suggestions. I know money is an issue for a lot of us. I also need the feeling of just needing to get away and be near water. You might consider a state park. Many of them have cabins for rent that area usually very inexpensive. Some are fully equipped but others may have water facilities nearby.

Here is a link to my DNR article that will be featured next week that talks about this very thing:
Department of Natural Resources - Great Lakes

You can also of course do internet searches for specific state parks.
