It is wonderful to hear so many ideas from everyone! I think it is important to use curriculum that is not only engaging to your child, but also relavent. My son has just started fifth grade and I really needed to plan to cover essential skills he would need to progress educationally. Check with your state education website for state standards, as well as other standard sources- like NCTM which will outline National Math Standards for grades K-8. Alissa

Here's 2 cents from a 'retired' homeschool mom. We used a variety of curricula, but always Saxon math, and always lots of reading of all kinds of books, fiction and nonfiction.
But what I want to contribute to the conversation is encouragement for anyone starting out, stressing out while looking at the thousands of possibilities for curriculum, and wondering which is the best: it doesn't really matter that much. Pick something and dive in. If it doesn't work, try something else. The fact that you're personally devoting yourself to your children's education and training is far more important than which books you choose.

I agree with LeeAnn! There are so many options, which is a blessing, but it can get overwhelming. If you are new to homeschooling see what your state standards are and assess what your child needs to concentrate on. Reading is wonderful- aloud, independently and in groups! For the older students be sure to use fiction, non fiction, biographies, poetry, classics, editorials, newspapers,... everything! :0)
