I started an avacado seed the other day and was wondering how long it should take to sprout if it does? I have never been successful in the past and avacadoes were on sale so I thought I would try again...

I started it in a glass of water. I didn't know you could put it in dirt. When you put it in dirt do you totally cover up the seed? In the water I left part of the seed out of the water and I guess it is the skin covering the seed--it has started to shrivel up. Thanks for responding...Connie

I always start mine in water and add a little water each day due to evaporation. I stick three toothpicks around the seed, half way down, so the seed is not totally emerged in the water. When the sprout is about three inches tall, I snip it to encourage more branching out. I plant it in soil when the roots are starting to crowd the glass. Just cover all but the very top of the seed where the growth starts.
