Did anyone read the Michelle Obama article in October's More magazine? I thought it was really interesting and it really shows her personality. It also sounds like they asked her some tough questions and she answered them well. What does everyone think of her?

The entire article isn't online but they have a few questions and answers from the interview - Camelot 2.0. I was only familiar with her as a public figure so it was nice to see her talking about her family, her children and her career.

I did not read your article but from what I have seen on TV and heard and seen she does not impress me at all and God for bid she should be come a First Lady. The first First Lady with an Attitude. What is it they say...if you have nothing good to say then don't say anything...I'll just stop right here.

She has made some controversial remarks in the past, that's for sure. I like that the interviewer made note of that and asked her some questions where she had to speak about some of the things she has said instead of leaving that out altogether.

Michelle Obama runs rings around the likes of Sarah Palin. She was brilliant on Larry King last night, and her remarks rise above the petty, man-spirited tone of Palin's ludicrous attacks on Obama. I wonder how Palin would fare on King? Oh, I forgot - She's not allowed to appear.

I did like her (Michelle) on Larry King last night. I think she was clear, concise, to the point, and a pleasure to watch. As an Obama supporter, I have found that sometimes Michelle's actions turn me off, but last night put her in a new light for me.

I wanted to watch her on Larry King but completely forgot that she was going to be on! I'm going to look and see if I can find a video of it online. I'll admit that at first I wasn't her biggest fan but I'm beginning to like her more and more these days. Did anyone get a chance to read the article?

I think if you compare Cindy McCain to Michelle Obama the choice is clear, Obama has more morals, more class, and more substance. Period.

I think this issue is even more off-topic than comparing the VPs are.
The wifes aren't going to be in office at all. Why worry about who is the better "choice"?

I think who someone picks as their life mate is important. It says something about their judgement. Just like the choice of VP candidate.
If you look at who Obama picked it says he plays it safe. If you look at McCain's pick it says he may be impulsive.
There are other things you can derive from who candidates pick to fill various jobs and who they are as a family. It says a lot.
In McCain's case the VP choice is very, very important because the VP has to be ready to lead due to his age.
I really think it's time our country embraced more than two parties. Our choices are too limited.

I think the issue of 'wives' is important because she will also be representing America. She'll go on at least 40% of overseas trips to meet foreign dignitaries, meeting with groups and organizations and establishing causes. That said, I'd rather see Cindy in that position than Michelle.

I agree that we need to start considering more than one party.
I still disagree with the picking of a spouse as being on par as picking a cabinet, though.
A person picks their VP and cabinet with an eye to getting a job done and getting the right person to fill each slot.
Hopefully a person picks their spouse because they love them.
My husband and I on paper do not make any sense, but we are the complete balance to each other. If we had to work together, however - we'd kill each other. And it would probably not be pretty. (I'm meaner than he is). Yet, let anyone else try to undermine him and I come out like a pitbull. No one messes with my hubby!

I think it's hard to judge as both Cindy McCain & Michelle Obama have different experiences that will benefit the nation if either one of them becomes the first lady. I personally love Michelle Obama, and the work she has done in the society. She is obviously a very intelligent person, and her interviews/speeches showed that she has well-sounded judgement.
On the other hand, even though Cindy McCain has taken some heat for her extremely wealthy upbringing, we cannot discredit all her contribution in the humanitarian efforts.
I personal think Michelle Obama would be a better first lady since her life experiences and upbringing resonate with more middle class Americans. In addition, it doesn't hurt to have a degree from Harvard Law School. That shows "something". However, I agree with Michelle (Taylor) that the picking of a spouse should not affect our pick for the cabinet (to a certain degree as long as the spouse is not a total ...) as love is a tricky thing.

I am super excited to have Barrack and Michelle in the White House. They have a such a comfortable, genuine, caring way about them. It's been toooooo long since we had a first family like that.

I know Cindy McCain -- I don't know Michelle Obama. I've attended many gatherings and spoken to Cindy many times. I've seen first hand how good Cindy is about being approachable, sweet and kind. Her negative press is very undeserved.

Michelle Obama is such a warm, classy, intelligent woman, and a great mom. She would be a wonderful First Lady and a role model for all our daughters.
I feel she would be a wonderful advocate for families like mine.

MO hasn't mentioned any attention to special needs kids or any other disabled people. Sarah Palin has said when she's in, you WILL have an advocate in the White house.

Michelle Obama is a compassionate and caring person who will be an advocate for all children, whether she is in the White House or not.
We will have an advocate in the White House no matter who is elected; the democrats posted a well-informed platform on disability issues back in January. Their positions on healthcare, education and other issues are crucial to my family and others with a son or daughter with a chronic health condition.
We already have a Down Syndrome Legislative Caucus - a bipartisan group that will look out for issues of concern to all families of children with disabilities.
Although Sarah Palin has a darling son with Down syndrome, she has shown some insensitivity to families in recent weeks referring to some parts of the country as more or less patriotic, that has caused pain and anguish to families who have loved ones serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, especially those who have sacrificed their lives or been severely injured. I know that she would not tell a grieving mom of a newly disabled son that they live in a less patriotic part of the country, in person. But her remarks seem insensitive and devisive.
Democrats address the issues of adults with disabilities, too, not just children. I appreciate the interest John McCain has shown recently in families of children with autism and have high hopes that heightened awareness through both campaigns will assure a better future of our children. Michelle and Barack Obama's daughters are darling and must inspire the best efforts of both parents.
But right now, the economy is the biggest challenge in my family's life. Hopefully George W Bush and this administration's experimentation with socialism in banking and Wall Street bail-outs will not turn out as badly as deregulation, greed and 'trickle down' economics has done. Whoever inherits this mess is going to need all the support we can give, and a strong level-headed wife.
No matter who is elected, he will be the President of all of us, and the First Lady will be called upon to support him and us after the election and the next four years. I prefer Michelle Obama and hope that Senator Obama is elected for many reasons. If Senator McCain was elected, we would not stop advocating for our families and children. That will continue no matter who is in the White House. I think it is unfortunate that no one is showing George W. Bush respect or loyalty. He has the same homey, tough demeanor as Sarah Palin and ran on a platform of Compassionate Conservatism. He is fortunate to have his First Lady and daughters standing up for him when everyone else seems to have abandoned him. He is still President of all of us.

Sarah Palin tells it like it is -- some areas are more patriotic. Traveling around the country and talking to the people is the true test of that.

Sarah Palin tells it like it is -- some areas are more patriotic. Traveling around the country and talking to the people is the true test of that. We'll have to agree to disagree on that. I would say a truer test would be among the troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, assuring Sarah Palin the freedom of speech to insult their communities at home while they are in harm's way. I apologize for not starting a new subject line - this one started out with a message of admiration for Michelle Obama and developed into a conversation about about Presidential Candidates Wives. Sarah Palin is running for Vice President so it is inappropriate to compare her to possible First Ladies. Palin opposes Colorado tax to help people with disabilities http://www.patriciaebauer.com/2008/10/21/palin-opposes-colorado-tax/The comment came in response to a question submitted by former Colorado First Lady Frances Owens, who described herself as a fiscal conservative, a supporter of the McCain Palin ticket and one of the spokespeople in support of Amendment 51. See earlier post: http://www.patriciaebauer.com/2008/09/29/colorado-waiting-lists/Colorado voters consider measure to reduce waiting lists September 29th, 2008 From the Rocky Mountain News: An initiative on Colorados November ballot would increase the states sales tax by 2 cents on every $10 to fund services for adults and children with developmental disabilities. The goal of Amendment 51 is to reduce the states waiting list of more than 12,000 children and adults with disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, who are waiting for immediate care or lifelong services. The measure would raise an estimated $186 million by 2010, doubling annual state funding to $370 million for services such as around-the-clock supervision, residential homes, nursing services and basic job training.

Now that she will be first lady and Sarah no longer needs her wardrobe maybe she can sell it to her. It's quite obvious she has no taste in clothes from what she wore Nov 4th. (and her other outfits also) She is in desperate need of some style help and a makeover. Where were the Fashion Patrol. That red dress looked like (?#@%^&*) and you don't wear a cardigan over that type of dress Michelle (can ya hear me).

I loved her dress, and although I have not watched alot of her, the impression I got was that she has no problem saying what she wants to. I did miss the memo though about if you don't like what someone is wearing you close your ears ?

When I saw that dress, I thought it was red floodlights reflecting on it and thought how clever it was! It was only when the family moved forward I saw it was designed like that with the red. Eyecatching anyway! I thought they all looked just right!

It's amazing to me how nasty some people are willing to be... They spend so much time talking about making a Stronger America, then spend the rest of their time trying to discredit and tear down the people who are most visible to the rest of the world.
Unbelievable.
And, BTW, at what point did what you wear and what you look like become more important than what kind of person you are in politics. Movies, I can see. Theatre, of course. TV shows, right on. Politics? Come on.
I want the person who will do the country the most good -- not the person who can sell the most fashionable clothes.

Thank you Cindy for saying that. Just goes to show you the pettiness in people. Free your mind and read into hers, Michelle Obama's that is and see if you (the complainers) can find anything else to throw out in judgment other than her apparel.
So what you hated it....And?

If you saw neither and just heard what they each had to say or read it in the papers it would be a different story. McCain acted old looked old and with his quirky manners next to Obama did not stand a chance. You may not think it is not what you saw or how it happened but subconciously this is what you choose. If you know anything about human nature you would know this. (you just won't admit it)

(and her other outfits also) She is in desperate need of some style help and a makeover. Where were the Fashion Patrol. That red dress looked like (?#@%^&*) ... Oh, you silly thing. One daughter was wearing red, the other black, so of course Michelle was wearing the perfect dress - both colors. She looked beautiful and timeless, and I will always remember how wonderful they looked in those first few minutes I realized that they will be our new First Family of the USA. And she has already been asked what her plans as First Lady would be: ..."My first job ... is going to continue to be 'mom-in-chief,'" she said in a recent magazine interview referring to daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7. She also says she hopes to focus ways women maintain a work-family balance, and the needs of military families ... Michelle Obama - U.S. First Lady Role ...(Michelle) Obama suggested that if she were to become first lady, she would take on women's and family issues, prompted by the stories she has been hearing from females on the campaign trail. ... ... "And if I have the honor of becoming the next first lady, I want to continue these conversations like the ones I've had with these incredible women across the country. I want to ensure that their voices don't get drowned out ever again in Washington."... Chicago Sun Times - Michelle Obama as our next First Lady By the way, I read this last year in Vanity Fair: ..."Michelle Obama, who turns 44 in mid-January, is also young, by First Lady standards. Regally tall, stunning, and city-chic ..." Another fashion review read: ...the worlds collective gaze soon turned to future First Lady Michelle Obama as she joined her husband on the podium in Chicagos Grant Park. And, what they saw will likely keep the fashion world buzzing for days. Whether you loved it or hated it, Mrs. Obamas frock choice -- a red-and-black sleeveless sheath with a criss-crossed black satin cummerbund off Narciso Rodriguezs SS09 runway -- definitely made a statement.
Michelle Obamas decision to sport an American designer was no surprise; shes been doing so with everyone from J.Crew and Thakoon to Mario Pinto throughout the campaign. ...Id argue Michelle Obama made her most commendable fashion statement as of yet. The dress was by all accounts unexpected, unconventional, and right on trend ... Like any true fashion icon, Michelle Obama knows how to push the sartorial envelope, and how to ruffle some fashion feathers. I just cant wait to see whats awaiting us come Inauguration Day. The London Times online yesterday wrote: ...Everything about this woman speaks to the modern, post-feminist woman: she is manifestly clever, independently minded, attractive in a normal, accessible way ... Her demeanour is a reassuring mixture of sassy and self-deprecating; her easy, confident dress sense neither too sexy nor too self-conscious. Most of all, however, she appears to be the personification of sanity... I admire her as a person and as a mom, as an individual and as a wife, and quite decidedly as a First Lady of my family's country. Pam W SE of Seattle Pam W wrote: I appreciate the Republicans buying lovely clothes and providing make-up and haircare professionals for Sarah Palin. Too often, mothers of children with disabilities reflect the lack of time, energy and wealth required to look as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside.

I've never understood the need to focus on what the candidates and their wives wear. The focus should be on what they do.

There's a good story in the Chicago Tribune 11/09/08 - about Michelle Obama's transition to being First Lady: Michelle Obama blazes a new trail When Michelle Obama walks into the White House on Monday for the traditional post-election tea between the first lady and her successor, she'll be taking the first steps along what many historians believe could be a groundbreaking path. ...
... Michelle Obama also can depend on advice from her immediate predecessor, Laura Bush, who defended the future first lady after she was criticized by Republicans ...last winter. Michelle Obama later sent Bush a note expressing her gratitude.
Aides said the two women had a warm conversation last week when Bush called to congratulate the Obamas and invite them to visit the White House.
On Monday, their tea will mark the 100th anniversary of White House tours for the future first ladies. Historians expect it to be among the most cordial.
"I think it will go unusually well," Anthony said. "Both of these women are extremely gracious people, and they have shown a lot of respect for each other too." Just as her secret service code name, "Renaissance," pays tribute to a time when higher learning, cultural understanding and creative arts moved an entire continent out of the Dark Ages, historians believe Michelle Obama's education and understanding of America's diversity could usher in a new era for first ladies. There's also a story on Code names for the first-family-to-be - Malia is 'Radiance' and Sasha is 'Rosebud.' Quite appropriate for the beautiful first-daughters-to-be, too. Pam W SE of Seattle

So we went from dissing Palin to dissing Michelle Obama based on clothing? Women cannot get a break! She was clean. She was dressed up. Just because some people did not like it, give her a break. We all have varying senses of style. Who cares what she wears. It was totally appropriate.

My opinion is that a First Lady's main job is to be a major support to her husband (who has one of the toughest and most stressful jobs I can think of), and to be a "face" for women. As times have changes, so has the American woman. We've come a long way from Jackie O. - who was the epitome of the mother and housewife, to Hilary Clinton and Michelle Obama who are mothers and trailblazers. Their outfits are not going to be as restrained and conservative - these aren't conservative women, these are leaders in their own rights. These are inspriations for young women. But sitting here and getting beliigerent over someone's wardrobe seems a bit misplaced. Don't we have many other things to worry about? Like what is Brittney Spears going to do with her hair this week?

I'm pretty sure Brit' was going to shave it again. I heard she liked that look the best Plus, it worked the best with all the wigs she wears.

First Ladies should only wear Chanel Suits and modest gold chains with crosses. Okay, okay, I am so joking. heehee. Let's go back to arguing what breed the First Dog should be when Obama gets his kids that puppy. Obviously an issue of grave import to our country's future.

02 is the year my husband and I got married. 2002... get it? LOL
as for the First Dog... I would say something that makes a political statement and yet is small enough the girls can enjoy. How about a Chinese Shar-Pei?

I didn't especially like the dress either, but what do I know about dresses? I do, however, feel that Michelle Obama is a very smart, gracious, wonderful woman who will make us all proud.

I loved that dress. It was a great color combination and it was orginal. She wasn't trying to be Nancy, Jackie, Hilary, Lady Bird, etc.......she was being Michelle!

Coming in late, but just thought I'd add my $.02 worth on the dress. Up close (in a zoomed very close photo) it looked fine. But my first impression when I saw it election night was that it made her look pregnant! I did a double take, seriously. I think it was the fact that the dress was black except around the belly and bust -- which kind of accentuates the areas that are more prominent when pregnant.
However, I think that the Obama's will bring some class to the White House, and that Barack will, unlike so many men in positions of power, be faithful to his wife and family. They seem like they center him, which is how it should be.

Saturday, January 17th, was Michelle Obama's birthday! How did you celebrate? This is an amazing weekend ~ I hope you were able to catch some of the coverage of the "Whistle Stops" on tv, the internet, or in person! I think this issue is even more off-topic than comparing the VPs are.
The wifes aren't going to be in office at all. Why worry about who is the better "choice"? I don't think it's about "who is better" but the class and aura of the people who will be our new authoritarians. That's all.

Michelle has such a venerable mix of class, sharp intellect and feminine strength. She is her husband's best friend and advisor, and I feel will play a strong background role in his presidency.
As a fashion conscious society, I feel there is nothing wrong with making note of what our first lady wears. In Michelle's case, she offers clean and classic as well as affordable taste, and a svelte figure to show case it. I thought her gold inauguration dress was lovely.

I didn't like the red and black number (horrid...looked like it was setting itself on fire) and I don't like the yellow outfit either...or was it the crown jewels around the neck. I think she should stick to tasteful and appropriate and save the flash for personal occasions. Sorry Michele lovers but she has not my vote so far in the clothes department.

I actually thought her dress today was very reminiscent of Jackie O. Kennedy.

I loved the J Crew yellow outfit. I agree the broach she used to close the sweater wasn't the best choice, but her skin tone and such, it was a great choice!

I did like her gown for the inaugural ball but still felt she could have made a better choice with the daytime yellow. On tv it looked like something out of Liberace's closet. It was all sparkles and the cyrstals around the collar you couldn't tell if it was part of the dress or a necklace. Too flashy for daytime. I don't understand the reaason why everyone has to emphazie J Crew. Style is not about how much something costs. You can spend a million bucks on soemthing and still look bad if it is wrong.

Well i loved the outfit she wore during the day classic yet elegant... not feeling the evening gown didn't flatter her body type at all ..... but all in all i think she's quite a stylish lady i've see n lots of pics, notes on gleanerblogs.com/fashion which i think show a very fashion savvy lady .... or her stylists are doing a pretty good job :)

I thought the reader was refering to the Day before the inauguration yellow outfit. The inaugural dress suit wasn't as yellow as people think, It was a very mild yellow arccording to a friend of mine who worked the inauguration. She said it was more of an almondy yellow, more of a creamy yellow brown. Depending on which station you watched, you could see the suit in different colors. Her dress suit reminded me of the many black church outfits that many black women wear to church. I thought it was very classy and elegant. Very Jacki O'ish.
As for my saying it was a J. Crew... was to emphasize it was not a designer ensamble, but somethign the "common" person could wear. I thought that outfit was well put together except for the broach holding the sweater set together. I think she coudl have chosen something a little smaller, but there are people who liek those larger broaches.
I personally like Michelle Obama's style. The only bad choice so far she has made in my opinion is the red and black victory speech dress from Grant Park. Made her look mismatched, pregnant, and just not well fitted.
