I came across a great article about finding a DIEP flap surgeon while I was researching breast reconstruction options. Thought others might benefit from it too.

I personally found this article really useful. While there are plenty of DIEP flap surgeons across the country, I didn't realize so few of these "specialists" perform DIEP breast reconstruction routinely. Some docs advertizing the procedure have not necessarily performed that many DIEP flaps at all!! Not very comforting.

The article above was very useful in educating me as to which questions to ask to ensure the surgeon we chose had the necessary experience. There are also a bunch of links in the article to other sites listing DIEP docs around the country (now that you know what questions to ask). Hope others find the article as useful as I did.

The same website also has some good info about the DIEP flap as well as breast reconstruction options in general.

Thanks for sharing this information. It's no joke trying to find a qualified surgeon for this procedure and every bit of information helps.

Have you made a decision as to a surgeon?

Yes I have.

We'll be using Dr Chrysopoulo of PRMA Plastic Surgery in San Antonio (the article I mentioned above is actually from his website). He is extremely experienced in the DIEP flap procedure - his group performs over 300 DIEP flaps per year! Anyone who's done the research will know that that is a huge number. He spent a lot of time with us during our visit and we felt extremely comfortable with him.

We called a lot of breast reconstruction groups around the country including the ones that everyone mentions on the message boards. PRMA performs by far the most in the country.

The practice seems to be very efficient and the staff are extremely nice and helpful. They take care of everything including all the insurance headaches. I would recommend very strongly that people look into using PRMA if they are considering breast reconstruction.

Not set in stone just yet. Recovering from radiation. I'm thinking I'll wait until after the New Year.
