Diamonds consist of pure carbon, starting out as coal, millions of years ago, heated and compressed into carbon crystals, which are very tightly packed groupings of carbon atoms. Each carbon atom is bonded to its neighboring carbon atoms. This is what makes diamonds so hard, and loose diamonds are used as industrial tools as they are harder than the substance they are drilling into.
