Sounds harsh to say you're broke because you want to be - but that's the premise behind our September Abundance and Wealth Book Selection by Larry Winget - Here's a link to the review article: You're Broke Because You Want To Be by Larry Winget

What do you think, is being broke a choice?

I think it'd be difficult to say yes or no without knowing specific circumstances and individuals. I mean, we all make bad choices with money and the people in our lives.....and if someone keeps making those bad choices, then maybe yes, being broke is a "choice." But if you make a single bad choice or bad decision and that makes you broke for the next 5 years, that may not mean it's an ongoing choice. It's just a mistake.

It is so hard to say. Much of it is dependant on circumstances and upbringing and just exactly what stage we are at in our life.

I am currently studying full-time at university, I also work 30 hours a week. I live on my own, support myself, and rely on no one else for anything. I have had to take out a substantial loan to pay for an important treatment program. My resources are limited, I can only afford the bare essentials. I rarely splurge. I am just keeping my head above water.

I am doing the best I can given my circumstances. I may be broke at the moment, but I am working my backside off to ensure that it will not be the case in the future.

I do understand where this guy is coming from and I think that many of us do make unwise decisions in regards to spending habits. I'm sure if we all looked at our finances, we could find a way to cut costs on something.

The idea of today is to "live within your means, even if you have to borrow to do so". We all want what we want, NOW. If we can learn to wait just a little while and maybe save up.. yes, I know that "saving" is a new idea for some people... then you can save yourself bucket loads and you will most likely appreciate what you have. You will also find that your money will go just that little bit further.

I think when people get into a certain lacking money mindset, it's hard to break out of it without a lot of conscious focus. They say that if someone is broke and in debt, and they win the lottery, soon they will be broke and in debt again.

In Harv Eker's Secret of the Millionaire Mind, he says each person has a financial "set point" and they return to that place over and over. The secret is to raise your set point.

Sometimes this takes a lot of internal work, figuring out what your inner issues might be toward money, what ideas you've grown up with and what you tell yourself each and every day in regards to money.

I think these internal ideas can be changed but you also have to be ready to take action toward obtaining more money in your life. You can't just sit and meditate and expect it to fall into your lap.

There's a big difference between wishing you had lots of money and actually believing you'll have it. I think the believing comes from taking actions to assure your belief comes to reality.

I just saw the author of this book Larry Winget on a TV commercial for Hyundai cars. I think it was called the Dollars and Sense campaign.

It was pretty good. Count me in for the book club next month

Has anyone read this book or any of his books? Any thoughts about Larry Winget?

He definitely has a no nonsense approach to managing money.

I find this point really interesting and have battled with it since reading Joe Vitale's similar, rather harsh-sounding take on it!

I definitely believe that when you are born into poverty of any kind, it's much harder to see a way out and to imagine what abundance/wealth feels like. It's much easier to be constantly frightened about failing and being poor again, creating the cycle of negative attraction.

So while I agree with his point, I don't think it's a question of "wanting to be" poor, and feel that it's more a case of not knowing what being "rich" (whether in monetary terms or not)feels like. Does that make sense? That has been the case in my personal experience anyway. :0)

I can definitely see this point, Lauren.

When one lives under the weight of failure - or the expectation of failure for most of their life - it is hard to overcome that. Say a child tries to save a dollar here and there, and tucks it away- but then has an older sibling or even a parent that will take that monye from them for drugs or gambling, or any other number of vices - it is hard not to become discouraged.

And many people feel it is safer (mentally and emotionally) to not even try bettering themselves, than to try and have someone beat them down or humiliate them.

It is a sad world we live in. frown
