Grrr... another tale of a harassed nursing mama in a restaurant. This story is case in point why Breastfeeding Laws are essentially meaningless unless they have enforcement provisions attached where offenders can be fined or charged with breaking the law. In this case, the police worked against her!

Story from the Lexington Herald-Leader

I don't about this first hand but I have heard of similar things happening here in UK. I don't think we have breast feding laws though.

Hmm.. Jan, I'll have to look that up. Europe is usually ahead of us on all things supportive and healthy for women and babies!

Ugh. This just makes my blood boil sometimes. Actually - I'm eight months pregnant - it makes me want to cry.

I can't believe the police officers forced her to leave. Not only should McDonald's be apologizing, but the City and the Police Department should ALSO be issuing public apologies!

Nurse-in anyone? I'll join you in a month. *wink*

So much for "Family friendly restaurant", eh?

I think Mass has actually passed a law stating that public breastfeeding is legal. I nursed both of my girls & also nursed them in public. I always toss a light blanket over myself & the baby so as to be discreet.

I'm not saying this woman was indiscreet...

Jeanne - I too have always nursed discreetly (I didn't use a banket though - just a baggy shirt) but I too have had illegal harassment about nursing my first born.

There is only one case I've heard of a woman being asked not to nurse somewhere and her breast was actually exposed in anyway. Most of the cases I've heard/experienced have been just the THOUGHT of breastfeeding that bothers people...but the actual seeing of a naked boob.

*laughing* If it were a naked boob that were an issue we would have mall dress codes, and porn wouldn't be such a booming business. *wry grin*

Back in the 80's I was asked to leave the Citadel mall in Colorado Springs due to breast feeding my daughter while sitting on a bench in the mall.

Not only did I not leave but I brought a few friends with me the next day. smile

I agree we really need some laws about this. I find it sickening that I can look all over and see billboards of sexually and enhanced boobies but if you see a nursing baby everyone loses their minds.

:::rabid former breast-feeder here::: (hey, my kids are teenagers--ack one is actually almost 22!)

McD's is gross anyway. If we all ate at cool vegetarian hippie restaurants, this would never happen!

(Yeah, I know not every town has them, unfortunate eh...)

This is actually the first of two incidences this past week where a McDonald's employee asked a nursing mother to leave or cover up while nursing.

I plan to write McDonald's headquarters.

Once is a fluke by one ignorant employee. Twice is time for some major policy changes....like "We Welcome Nursing Mothers" stickers on the entry doors of every McD's.
