No stress means we're dead...too much can kill us. Is there a happy medium?

I know that I need just the right amount of stress in order to function at an optimal level. Too little and I'm listless, bored, and tend to overeat. Too much and I can't prioritize, I find ways to avoid just about everything, and I can't eat. What's a 40-something to do?
