My grandmother used to use a small crochet hook to just poke through the fabric and draw the yarn through. Then once she had the first row done, she would switch to a larger hook that was the right size for the yarn.

hi now this i would like to learn i bought a fabric hole punch i have an awl the hole punch wont punch a hole in jean material as it is a denim vest that i want to make sleeves for same with the awl i would like to be able to poke a hole in the fabric and then crochet the sleeves the vest is pricey but it is just sitting in the cupboard i may just try poking a hole with a scissors if anyone has any better way i would like to hear from you please because i live in markham on. ca i cant find any of these fancy doodads rifka
Hi, I'd simply work a row of blanket stitch around the fabric and then crochet into that. I've got an article about this on the main BellaOnline Crochet page.
Remember to use a good firm yarn for the blanket stitch!
