I am trying to figure out what kind of stitch this is and how to do it. Here is a picture of it.

My grandmother used to use a small crochet hook to just poke through the fabric and draw the yarn through. Then once she had the first row done, she would switch to a larger hook that was the right size for the yarn.

hi
now this i would like to learn
i bought a fabric hole punch
i have an awl
the hole punch wont punch a hole in jean material
as it is a denim vest that i want to make sleeves for
same with the awl
i would like to be able to poke a hole in the fabric
and then crochet the sleeves
the vest is pricey but it is just sitting in the cupboard
i may just try poking a hole with a scissors
if anyone has any better way i would like to hear from you
please
because i live in markham on. ca
i cant find any of these fancy doodads

Hi, I'd simply work a row of blanket stitch around the fabric and then crochet into that. I've got an article about this on the main BellaOnline Crochet page.

Remember to use a good firm yarn for the blanket stitch!

The EdgeryDoo would work very nicely on jean material.
