I have two large philadendrums (I know that's not spelled correctly, and I can't find it in the dictionary). they are on either side of my front porch and have been there for 10 years at least.

The younger of the two has grown something that looks like a banana. The day after we first saw it, it opened up to reveal a white cone shaped thing inside. It was open that one day only. I have checked it in the morning, around noon, and in the evening. It closed back up and has not reopened that I have seen.

Do these things bloom? The older plant was well established when we bought the house over 12 years ago. I planted the younger one about 11 years ago. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Yes they do! They are members of the Arum family of plants that all have spathe and spadix type flowers. The spathe is the covering around the spadix which is actually a large grouping of little flowers compacted together.

Notable flowers in this family are Peace Lilies, Anthurium, & Calla lilies.

Maybe these links can help you find out what kind of philo you have.

Thanks Wendy! Now that you've mentioned it, the cone inside did appear similar to the blooms on my Peace Lily. I had not made that connection. These plants are used frequently in landscaping in our area.

The younger plant which bloomed was originally growing under our oak tree in the backyard. It only had two leaves on it when I moved it to the front yard. Now there are at least 5 stalks and it's well over 4 feet wide and a good 3 feet tall. I had never seen anything like this on either of the plants.

Thanks for the website. I'll try to identify the ones I have.
