If you had to guess blindly, what would you guess? Do men talk more? Do women talk more? Answer before reading below!

Several books (including the Female Brain) claim that women talk MUCH more than men do (on the order of 2 or 3 times as much). This claim was put to the test by the Boston Globe -

I think women are more open to talking about personal things, children, other women, and men

I don't know, I think men talk more about women, when they are in the dating stage Women talk more about men in that stage I know men who easily could talk for hours and hours about a topic they are interested in - politics, sports, cigars, fine wines, sailing ... When Bob is coming back from a dart match or golf he will give me play by plays of the entire event LOL edited so women were talking about MEN not WOMEN

I do agree that a stay at home mom will talk much more on average about her kids than a man will, but that is because that is what all her time has been spent on. The guy probably talks much more about what he's done at work for the same reason.

My family has been extremely "matriarchal". The women kind of take the lead, and the men tend to be really laid back.
So in my life, the women do talk a lot more. My grandmother even speaks for my grandfather sometimes, LOL. He just rolls his eye where she can't see him.

I think it varies based on person. My dh does NOT talk all that much. He has his moments, but overall, he doesn't talk as much as I do. DS -- situational, but when he was little, well, we used to look for the off switch. Or mute button. We weren't picky, just had tired ears!

I think it also depends on the situation. A guy might be quiet around his wife if his wife tends to do the talking. But that same guy might be quite talkative if he is off with his best friend, talking about things he really loves We know couples where the woman does most of the talking if you're out on a "double date" situation - but the guy does a lot of talking if he goes off with the other guy.

Aha! Look, Louann Brizendine admits she had no real proof for her claim!

Finally, Louann admits there was no real research to make her claim, and she has removed it from current printings of her book -
"Academic feminists have given mixed reviews to "The Female Brain". She was given the tongue-in-cheek 2006 Becky Award, which is given to "people or organizations who have made outstanding contributions to linguistic misinformation." She was given this award in recognition of one sentence of her book, The Female Brain, which was removed in future printings. In this sentence of the book she contrasted how many words a woman and a man use in one day, and "It turns out that the figures Brizendine reported had been taken from a book by a self-help guru" which were shown to be incorrect."

Lisa I'm not seeing the links I think you put in just text that says "BellaOnline ALERT: Raw URLs are not allowed in these forums for security reasons. Please use UBB code. If you don't know how to do UBB code just post here for help - we will help out!" I reckon you might be the one to help yourself out

That could be, that both men and women talk about the same. It may seem like women talk more because men are usually silent when women talk about the things, feelings, emotions, etc., that they do.
In an entirely different setting, as you mention, men can go hours talking about trivial things and passions that interest them among other men and sometimes women if they show an interest or on the prowl.
