Good for you Pikasam.
I don't mind being looked at as mean for saying that - in fact, people say I am one of the sweetest people they have never met.
So I am going to get it off my chest, and it feels good.

You and me both.

I'm a freak as I don't feel anything for children ... I'm a weirdo as I prefer cats to kids... etc etc etc.

My sister suggested I could be a sociopath (in a nice way, honest!), but I don't *think* so.. as I can empathise with people quite well.... I dunno...

When my cat escaped, I was so, so worried... when the neighbours knocked at the door and said 'Do you own a small grey cat that's recently had an operation?' (he had been shaved for ringworm) I was like 'Yesssss!!!' and they said 'He's just wandered in our house and is staring at our cats'

I nearly burst into tears I was so relieved as I had been searching for him for 2 hours, totally frantic.... and the next day I bought the neighbours a HUGE bunch of flowers to say thankyou for telling me they had found my cat...

I'd actually say it would be 'sad' to have to 'pretend' what you prefer in your life - I mean, *why* are all humans *supposed* to prefer one form of life over the other? Surely as humans, we should all use our 'higher intelligence' and respect peoples opinions, even if they aren't the same as ours?

If you look at the ways humans treat the planet and each other, we really aren't that great. Animals only take what they need to survive, and leave little impact on the planet. Hmmm...maybe they have the right idea?

"Cats Rule" !
You must be related to me!
Thank you for expressing your opinion - I don't feel much toward children - and that doesn't make me or anyone a bad person one bit.
I devote my life to rescuing animals; I have been with animals that have been tortured by children - discusting.
I don't care for kids, I love animals and nature, and I am a great person - that is my new mantra now.....

Much more pleasant than mine... which is mostly

'Treat others how I wish to be treated... and try and wind up all idiots, cretins and morons who try and impose their religious / pro -life / pro-hunting / pro -kid ideas on me'

Wow Angela, your boyfriend sounds like an insensitive prick for yammering on about poisoning every living thing around him. (by the way, there's a machine that emits Co2 which draws mosquitoes in without killing everything around it, and as someone else pointed out, if that poison is killing everything around you, it CAN NOT be good for humans either!) By the way, what he did may very well be illegal if those eggs belonged to songbirds, since they're protected from human harm. Every time he walks on his lawn he's going to soak up some of that poison too. That's really disturbing to me.

As for saving a kid vs. a dog, well, that's what two hands are for, grabbing each one by the scruff and hauling 'em! I've had a few encounters with animals and kids that needed to be rescued. One time a mother was boarding a bus with one of those mega strollers, bags, baby etc, while her toddler just wandered away before he got on the bus, and started heading to the street. I jumped out the rear exit of the bus, snatched up the kid as his feet hit the street, and toted him to the front of the bus where the mother looked surprised that I was holding her kid. >_< Another time while I was on my deck I heard splashing noises, so I look down and see something trapped in a pot that had filled with rain water. I run down and lift out a fledgeling house sparrow. Poor thing was utterly soaked and had no way of getting out on it's own, and once it was dried didn't want to get off my finger to get on the tree! I brought it into my apt. and managed to coax it onto a branch I found that was laying over a box (in case it fell of it's perch). Sunrise the next morning the bloody thing was peeping it's head off while a riot of birds were flying around my deck. I put my finger against it's chest, it hops on, I bring it outside and it hops onto the nearest branch where it's family was waiting. I went back to bed. >_< The thing is, I had far less resentment about saving the bird than the kid. Maybe because humans are supposed to be smarter, yet I see kids all the time do stuff they KNOW they aren't supposed to do just because they want to see if they can get away with it.

(sorry for the wall of text!)

Grey, what a lovely, heartwarming rescue story. I mean the one about the baby bird, of course wink . The human story just left me feeling annoyed that the mother wasn't watching her "most important thing in the world".

There's something about animals that really brings out the protective instinct in me, like many others on this board...

Yeah, not quite what you'd expect from one who wants "What a Wonderful World" played at his funeral - the song literally gets him choked up.

"I see trees of green, and red roses too...
I see 'em bloom for me and you...
I see skies of blue, and clouds of white..."
Then SPLAT! Lizard hits the dirt from his stupid fog.

What a self-serving, hypocritical bastard! I think I'll break up with him and donate my time to a gecko rescue group.

I don't know, maybe if you pointed out that yes, he was in fact destroying a small chunk of the ecosystem right there instead of "maybe destroying" he'd figure out he was doing something wrong. Because not only was he killing just those mosquitoes, he was probably killing a multitude of other insects, ones that birds, lizards and other critters need to live. Other things eat those things, and now none of them can eat them because they are either dead, or will be poisoned in turn by eating tainted meat.

OMG Angela. I haven't read everyone's responses yet, but my first reaction is...can I dropkick some sense into your boyfriend? I am [censored] at him. I can't believe he would be so wanton about killing innocent creatures...a birds' nest and a lizard??? That is terrible!!!

There was a comic in the SF Chronicle called Farley that this reminded me of. One of the characters is named Velma, and she camps in Yosemite and constantly sprays pesticides all around her campsite. Here's a link where you can see her:
