During my research for this week's article I was surprised to learn that so many of the herbs we are still familiar with today were common in the Medieval and Renaissance.

The article is Herbs in the Renaissance

So, do you use them and how? I have loved lavender ever since I was a little girl and my Mother would buy little wicker sachets of lavender flowers for my sister and me. Lavender has been easy to grow in my garden, unfortunately all my attempts to grow rosemary in a container have been unsuccessful.

It probably gets too waterlogged. Rodsemary likes a very free-draining sandy compost, with plenty of crocks in the bottom of the pot. It likes sunny, hot conditions...
Most herbs we use originate from the mediterranean and asian counties. There are some local herbs like comfrey, feverfew, woodruff and wild garlic that originate in colder climates, but generally herbs like good drainage and sun.
Plants we never considered as herbs are very medicinal. Goosefoot, chickweed, dandelion and nettles, for example, are all extremely medicinal herbs and potent remedies for many ailments.....

Thanks, Alexandra. I think my pots of rosemary suffered from both over and under watering. I tried to grow it in a greenhouse window with a western exposure but I think spider mites were endemic in that window. If I let the pot dry out a little between waterings the mites would take over, if I rinsed the mites off, the plant was always wet. frown I had a house cat at the time so I was afraid to use chemicals on my house plants.

But we have since moved and mites don't seem to be a problem here, and we no longer have the cat so I might try again.
