If you were healthy, but had, I dunno, a limp from some minor thing, would you feel it appropriate to be told you should stay home for the next number of months, and not buy your own groceries or anything? Ms A~ I was told that. I was also told to spend a minimum of three months in physical therapy (the only thing the Doc thought I should leave home for). The difference was that I was living alone. I had no choice but to leave the house. There was no one else to pay my bills, pick up my groceries, etc. I went back to work and used my physically demanding job as a substitute for PT. Most of the time, babies have two parents. Parents can also get relatives or sitters to cut them loose for a few hours. There are options, ways of getting new moms out of the house without dragging newborns through malls. I couldn't get a babysitter for my knee. You're comparing apples and oranges.

Um -- once the mother is able to move around (and I do NOT advocate special parking spots, btw, for new parents, etc.), I see no reason she shouldn't be able to take her newborn out with her. I was at the mall, or going for walks around the neighborhood, when my ds was weeks old. And it was COLD -- I just bundled us up! I think we mean in inappropriate places. Like movie theaters.

Well, if they are dragging the poor thing... but most parents are carrying their child, not dragging. And nowadays, with our mobile society, many new parents do not have relatives nearby to watch the child. Sitters -- um, I'd rather not leave someone I scarcely know to take care of my newborn. (And for nursing mothers, more so.) Now, that said, when ds was 6 months, I left him with a neighbor while I went to a wake with dh. Not a fun activity, but also not one I could bring a baby to.

Well, that's a different matter! We went to the movies a LOT before our son came along, on the theory that we wouldn't be going after. (And we were horrified to see a kid no more than 4, maybe only 3, taken to Terminator 2, and very upset being there.) Now we hardly go to the movies, because for the most part, we feel the value isn't worth that much money, and would rather watch it at home on video, and being able to make our own food and restroom breaks as needed. We're a boring couple!

Well, we invested in a Home Theater setup and now that it has been tuned up, we don't want to go out to a theater. Just record the movie and/or buy the DVD/BD/HDDVD and you have all the entertainment you could want. That includes pause, bathroom breaks, and the popcorn machine.

And nowadays, with our mobile society, many new parents do not have relatives nearby to watch the child. Really? I would think that there are more relatives available. My sister uses at least four different relatives to watch her kids. It's only a 20-minute drive for me, so I'm there quite often. And if relatives or friends aren't around to help out, don't you think that should be something to take into consideration before having a child?

Ms A~ I never said one word about not getting to know your sitter before leaving your offspring with them. Your posts are consistently on the verge of argumentative and I find it frustrating. I do not come here to have everything I say picked apart and offhandedly refuted.
MNK regulars~ I'm going to take a little time away from posting on MNK before I lose my temper and Kim tosses me out. I'll be around.

I am going to have to agree with Myra's assessment of Ms Literal.

I was being humorous... or at least, attempting to! (I just had a mental image of the kid being dragged...)

I'm a germophobe, to an extent, and I don't think newborns should be out anywhere. It's my opinion. Their little ears are also very sensitive to noise. I think it's sad that people don't have support systems. I can't imagine having no one to help. Hugs to you Myrabeth.
