I know most people here carry m&m but I carry those pocket coolaids and a bottle of water and peanut butter crackers in my glove compartment so if I am out driving I have something easy to open and quick acting. a small bottle coke will work too! that is to raise your levels.
the snacks trailmix is fating and has lots of carbs. the nut on the other hand are good for you and the carbs are complexe bread carbs so they will bring your sugar up slowly that is the thing. If you are on insulin or you skiped a meal and it is droping that drunk feeling is not a good feeling and you want to get rid of it but bringing your sugar up fast! once that feeling starts to go away you need something to stablize your blood sugar like protien and bread pb and crackers are great for me. but cheese and crackers toast and meat those are all great too. the problem more newbies have is that they drink there coke or eat there candy bar and go on then they either eat too much simple sugar and it spikes it way way way up and u feel like [censored] or you drink or eat just enough to bring it up to normal and then you go on and it drops again later. I learned from my dad who was a diebetic as well that if you drink a coke or eat some candy whatever take the simple sugar to bring it to normal and then eat the complexe carbs like an apple and pb and this gets it up and it will go up slowly so it doesnt spike and you can level out better and stay up in normal instead of crashing. I use pb and bread or fruit, and I use cheese but any low carb-ish protien or dairy-ish product will do these are just some things that you can get and it doesnt go bad after a few days. you can carry then and they dont spoil like say egg salad sandwitch.
I would pick something you can get in a convenent store like crackers and cheese or pb and crackers and keep with you. and keep the same thing with you dont change it!! I would not pick something that you like to eat all the time for fun. Not because you will eat it for fun but because if you tend to go low often you will learn to hate the snack. that is why I say dont change it plus if you keep the same thing with you all the time you can teach your friends and family the signs or going low and train them to find your snack but if you change the snack they wont know that that is what they need to give you.
I droped one day and I was with my cousin she was about 5 and I had taken my insulin for my sliding scale but my glucameter was off on what my blood suger was it read 350 and I was probly in the 150 range then I didnt eat as much as I thought i would so I droped hard and fast. I was muttering but she didnt know what I was saying. I had trained her to get my crackers out of my glove compartment and the bottle of water with the coolaide and mix it up and make me drink it and if that didnt work get my cell phone and call her grand ma or 911. I was driving and I managed to pull of the road. I was going to check my blood sugar and I didnt want to scare her so I didnt tell her what was wrong but by the time I got off the road... you get the picture.
the problem I had was I had a coke and a candy bar instead of the crackers and coolaide. she was so young that she knew that I drop but she didnt know to give me the coke and candy... she called her grandma who is my aunt and she told her to put me on the phone well my this point I am out of my head and passed out. so my cousin calls 911 because I get kind of [censored] and I scared her. the opperater on the 911 call asked where we were well I was going to a friends house so she had no idea. so the opperater started nameing off stuff she thought I might have with me. when my cousin said that she was suppost to give me the coolaide mixed with water and crackers but the only thing she could find was the coke and Snickers bar... the opper ater told her to pour that down my mouth and make me shallow it. by then I had totaly passed out and I remember waking up with her crying and coke all over me. She had told the opperater that I got mad at her and died so the opperater told her to feel for a pulse and she did and they told her I was still alive and that it was ok I would wake up in a few minute when the coke hit me and I did the opperater asked me what my name was and if I knew what had happen and I figured it out when she toldme that my cousin had called 911. she asked if I was a diebetic and I said yes and she asked if I was ok now or if I need a EMT's to come get me and asked where I was. I told her no I was fine and was going to call my friend to come get me by then my aunt had got there.
the whole thing taught me the importants of education family and friends and making sure that I had the same thing on hand at all times!
bty the cousin is now going to go to school for RN and will graduate this year from high school with honor. She called me up and said remember when... she told me that she was so scared that I was mad at her and I never got mad before and then she thought she had killed me and the coke brought me back to life.
She told me that If she could survive that she could deal with anything! Im her favorit!
I am just glad I dont get violetent when I drop that low I could have hurt her or killed her with out knowing that I had done it! I had never droped like that before and it scared the [censored] out of me! if it had droped any faster I could have crashed and killed us both! I may have got out of the car and wondered off and died or got hit by a car and if she had tried to stop me she would have faithly tagged along right there with me and then we'd both be dead! but if I had been by myself that day I would have died!
that is one of very few times that my blood sugar has gone waky on me and that was the worst I have ever been. I got a new glucometer that the coding was different to set and I had set it wrong. I got a new one the second my family figured out that it was the glucometer reading and not anything I was doing (it was about a month they just KNEW I was eating to much sugar and taking to much insulin and that it was all my fault!) anyways I have had the onetouch ultrasmart eversince. It is easy to code and you only have to code it when you open a new box not every time you use it!
ok so now that I have scared you about the dangers of not educating your family and bad glucometers and snacks....
the upside to keeping the same thing handy is you will learn how much to drink and eat to get you up to normal and how much to stay there. if you switch different things act slower faster have more carbs and there is just a lot of calulating and figureing and you are always expermenting with it and you take a chance that you dont have enough of it to help you or you get to much and then your playing spike and drop and that may sound fun but it is hard on my heart and kidneys and everythingelse and plus IT FEEL BAD!!!! yuck.
Go with what you know and if it aint broke dont fix it!
