Angels get pretty huge and like a deep tank...so a 20 deep would be the minimum, i would think. I have my gouramies in a 20 deep, BTW.

Gee....a cichlid journal.....why did I never notice this before...lol...since I have indeed posted here...I guess this is where I should keep posts about my rams! lol...

The three are doing fine by the way..hoping to get a few more at the end of the week, when they get a shipment in. I would like to give them a bit of choice as far as them pairing off goes. That of course means that I will have to get that 20 long up and running....gee, I have a birthday coming up next month..hhmmm...

I am starting my cichlid tank the middle of March, after my 21st bday! My boyfriend and his friend both have one. My boyfriend has a 40 gallon breeder, and our friend has a REALLY nice 75 gallon, both with African cichlids, mainly Malawi cichlids. My friend has appx. 24 fish in his tank, including an amazing Frontosa, 2 cyno-cats, 3 albino's, 1 albino pleco, a scribble pleco, two yellow labs (one which is actually orange! we can't figure out why he changed like that after being put in the tank), another Frontosa, 1 OB, 2 blueberries, 2 socolofis, an amazing vinestus, as well as MANY other fish. My boyfriend has 1 frontosa, 4 yellow labs, 1 vinestus, 2 pleco's, 2 ruby red peakocks, 2 socolofis, and 1 fryeri. I am also doing Lake Malawi cichlids, and I can't wait to start my tank.

How exciting BG ! Good luck on your new tank !

What size will it be? Will you have live plants ? Tell us about it during the process. Have you read the post I put on the "New Tank Troubles" thread about fishless cycling? It may be worth a try doing it that way rather than using live fish. Eliminates a lot of possible problems when you can put your fish in a tank that is already cycled, rather than worrying about the spikes that occuring during the process.

Good luck on your new tank, I look forward to hearing all about it !!

My husband got home last night with the boys to find the big tank drained almost all the way, with water EVERYWHERE, including soaked into our less than 1 yr old carpet and the bathroom with new linoleum. Fortunately, so far, the fish have survived -- One blue spot, and one red zebra, and the 2 plecos. Turns out the air pump vibrated itself off the shelf and the air hose disconnected, and sucked out the water from the tank. What a mess!!!!! We refilled the tank, DH put straps onto the shelf and air pump to prevent a repeat.

My tank is a 30 long, I already have it. This tank was a friend's, then my boyfriend's, and now mine. Another friend is giong to re-silicone it for me. I am going to have live plants, but maybe only, like, 2 or something. I am going to let my tank cycle for appx. 5-6 days before putting any fish in it. I know that I want blue cobolt zebras, socolofi's, frontosa, vinestus, a sunshine peakock, and a ruby red peakock. I do not want to over-populate the tank, I think I may go with 6-8 fish, but at the most 10.

A tank can't completely cycle in 6 days BG...but it's a start as long as there is a source of ammonia in it to get things going.

I think the next tank I start I'm going to give the raw shrimp and beer approach a try....except maybe I'll make it a wine cooler instead...lol...I like the idea of not having to worry about ammonia or nitrite burned fish and water changes. It would mean being really patient about adding the fish, but I think I can do that now that I have gotten the initial "Fish Splurg" out of my system...lol.

Let us know how the set up goes BG...I would love to hear about it !

Nann! What a hassle!! I have these 'things' on my air pumps that prevent water from backing up...but I suppose the airline could pop off of that end just as well as the end attached to the pump....ggrrr...hate when stuff like that happens!

I will have my tank set up in less than two weeks! I can't wait! At first I thought my boyfriend was insane about this fish thing, but now I love it. Fish are so.........relaxing to watch, such a wonderful de-stresser.

I am thinking about putting 2 male and 4 female chipoke's in my tank (a 30 long), then getting a 10 gallon to breed them in. I just don't know though. There are SO many fish I want. I know I am going with african cichlids. I LOVE chipoke's, sunshine yellow's, socolofi's, moori (blue dolphin) and venestus'. I think I may mix my tank up with just those. I haven't 100% decided yet. The only problem is, while all cichlids are aggressive, moori tend to be more aggressive than others.
