I thought about burial in an African Violet -- seeing as how they are from the same continent, but didn't want to mess with the dirt, etc. And the cichlids are very good at eliminating all evidence of their meals.

True. I fed my dead catfish to my bigger oscar (Iolus). He had to work very hard to digest the bones and one did poke through his gills - looked painful. but he seems okay, tho he is sulking. I added melafix to help his wound heal.
I also named the bigger parrot Fish Hercules. I guess I've decided they are going to make it.

Great names Jilly. I loved that show. I could almost name Sweetie Discord now that I have both boys. I hope Iolus makes it ok. Sounds painful to have a bone poking out.

Iolus is just fine, and healed. thx for asking. i did one day of melafix just in case, but did not remove the carbon. really, once these fish make it past the intro zone, they have amazing recoup powers.

I know this is a bit macabre, but I really enjoy feeding dead fish to my Oscars. Gulp! And they are gone. It's amazing how big those mouths are! And they eat from my hands, which is cool.

So people actually pay to see this? Way to go for the pet shop owners getting an extra buck!
I am messing around with breeding danios for my cichlids. Guppies are easy but I can get attached to them. These are for my eels and smaller cichlids, like the jewels and parrots. My oscars really can fit anything in their gaping maws.

just a note. Since I started feeding Xena (Oscar) live/dead fish, she has tripled in size. Wow! lots of protein to work with.
I also added a large clown knife to her tank. A good co-habitant.

Flounder is looking huge too. (Just think The Little Mermaid) He really is a big fish.
I've noticed that the striped and spotty cichlids tend to hide in the silk plant. It's got a bunch of leaves and they float to the area between the leaves and let themselves drift backward and down until you can barely see them.
But once food shows up, they're all out in force.

Jilly, Do only male or female cichlids have egg spots? I'm noticing that almost all the fish in our aquarium are popping up with them lately. Since we had to move the aquarium, we haven't seen any babies, and I'm wondering if they're getting in the mood so to speak.
