Live subtitling is always difficult because the person subtitling must hear the words before he/she can type them. Therefore there is always a delay and sometimes it's worse than others especially when foreign names and places are mentioned and the subtitler didn't know about them beforehand. If he/she does know beforehand they will code the words pre going to air.

Interestingly, these days most live subtitling is NOT done at the venue where the action/show/broadcast is taking place. It's usually done by a live link to the subtitler's office. Even live theatre is captioned this way.

Subtitling live requires a high skill level using a stenographer's machine like that used for court reporting.
