I think that if you can elect to go out at kill someone by joining the army at a certain age, nobody has any right to say you can't do something that isn't harmful to your body at that same age. (I also think it's nonsense that you can't buy liquor at the same age that you can join the army or vote)

Ah, yes - I'd forgotten about banks not loaning money to single women who might get married and get pregnant. Single women were denied job promotions for the same reason and married women without kids would be denied because the would just get pregnant and quit anyway.

Anyway, sterilization procedures and signing paperwork - back in the day when I had my hysterectomy (for cause) it was required that I sign a form saying I understood that the operation would result in sterility and after that there was something like a 2 or 3 day waiting period before the surgery could be done. I was in the hospital and preped for surgery when a nurse came in and said I had to sign the forms, go home, and come back in 4 days or so because someone had neglected to have me sign the form. I told them I was there for that surgery and I was having it that day. Period. They said no, impossible. I pointed out that if I did not get the for cause surgery as scheduled that I was going right from the hospital to my lawyer and filing a lawsuit. They moaned and groaned about the paperwork - I said "backdate the damned paperwork". They did. I got the surgery as originally scheduled.

Kittybeep, I can't BELIEVE you said that to grandma! Ha! That's awesome. I'm 29, and baby, the pressure is ON. My mom is getting hysterical because she's starting to believe that I may not want kids afterall. People are STILL telling her I'm too young and I will change my mind.

It can't be easy to stand up for your beliefs in that sort of environment - well done on successfully voicing them!

Thank you Manatee! I'm lucky that my mom is very supportive of my stance and so is my step-dad. It's just the relatives that are a pain in the [censored]. Get this, the 16 year old's sister (who was 17 and a junior in high school) was the pregnant one 2 years ago. The family never learns.

Also Manatee, what are those adorable animals in your pic? They look kind of like badgers but I'm kind of bad at telling these things...

Glad somebody in the world appreciates "my foul mouth" as my grandmother calls it! That sucks that your mom is putting pressure on you. Hopefully she'll come to her senses and realize it's YOUR decision to make and you'll be a happier person because you don't have kids. Best of luck!

Kittybeep, I felt the same way about anything getting out of my uterus alive. It just was NOT going to happen. I came of age in the days before Roe v. Wade and always kept an airline credit card free and clear in case I had to make a fast trip to Sweden. to take care of any slip up.

Hmm let's see you can change your nose, get bigger breast, pull your cheek bones up, reduce or enlarge your behind but you can't get your tubes tied ????? Gee that makes so much sense. I have seen young girls get these done before they were even 16 and that is ok(not with me it isn't) but not tie your tubes because you might change your mind ???

What if you change your mind about your nose? I did. I hated my nose and really wanted it fixed, but now I am in the process of embracing my unique beak.
