is it possible for birds to be epileptic? my bird/cockatiel has had seizures since i've had her. maybe about 4 years now. this morning she had seizures but only, this was 10x worse than ever before. she was gunky, and started to shake uncontrollably. she was just limp for awhile and couldnt even stand. she couldnt move or anything, she couldnt even hold her head up on her own. it scared me to death. i thought she was going to die. anyways, she's doing better now but she's still weak. i just havent found any information about seizuring birds. can anyone help me?

Oh - the poor thing. That must have been scary for both of you.

I would suggesting taking her to an avian veterinarian to have her checked out. I haven't heard of birds having epilepsy, but it wouldn't surprise me. A vet would probably have ignored the mild ones that don'thappen very often, but now that she has had a major one, may want to put her on medication to control it.

Please let us know what the vet says & how she is.

I've heard of a bird being exposed to teflon before and acting that way with seizures. His personality also changed drastically. Maybe before you got her she was exposed to something that makes her seize. I hope you can find out what's wrong with her when you go to the vet. Please let us know when/if you find out.

she had an appoinment for the vet yesterday, but i had to cancel due to some family problems... but she seems totally fine now. same old spoiled brat that she used to be. im so glad she's doing better though. it's like if nothing ever happened. right now she's running back and forth on the bottom of the cage because she wants me to hold her. i got her from a friend about 4 years ago, along with another female tiel. but she doesnt get seizures. however, she has never been able to be tamed. i've tried so hard with her, she doesnt bite but she runs away from me and hisses at me when i clean the cage, water, food etc. lol. so im going to ask my friend where she kept them.

a lot has happened in the past 2 years. Alice, the seizuring bird mentioned above, died about a year and a half ago. i've never taken a death so hard before (not even that of my grandmother) it was very hard to lose her. but since then, so much has happened. i shall give you an update. (are you ready?)

i came across a handsome fellow, a pied cockatiel at a local pet store going out of business. he was the last one there, and didn't seem quite happy. the owner told me someone had brought him in, and didn't know much about him. i purchased him and now he has a forever home. although i give him everything a birdy could ever dream of, he's so timid, and unsure about everything. i've not been able to tame him, but he will allow me to talk to him, and he will talk to me too. i decided to name him Jack the non-sparrow.

about a couple of months ago, my aunt calls me up and tells me she has the two tiels that belonged to my grandmother, who passed away about 3 years ago. i guess the family had been passing them around, since nobody seemed to want them. she told me that if i didn't want them, then she was just going to set them free. i know there's a slim chance of them surviving, and i couldn't let that happen. so i took them in. and now they have a forever home too! they are the cutest pair of pieds i have ever come across. the male sings all the time, and says words like "pretty boy", "hey little man" and "hello" amongst other things i don't understand. their names are Peaches and Little Man.

meanwhile, while i have been slaving away to the demands of retail, my birds Sully and Jack had been doing the deed. i came home one day to find a single egg on the bottom of the cage floor. i really had no idea what to do at that point, so i just put a shoe box in the cage, and set the egg in it. in the next few days, Sully had laid 5 eggs total. i wasn't sure if they were fertile or not, and i really knew nothing of babies. a few weeks later i hear chirping. to my surprise i found a baby! in a panic, i went online and read up everything there is to know about babies. i went out and bought all the necessities i thought i would need, though i was planning to have the chicks parent fed, since i had no time. anyhoo, 3/5 eggs hatched. but the last chick was born with splayed legs so i took it to the vet and handed over custody to the vet. since she wanted me to care for it for more hours than i possibly had in my free time. i work. and i work a lot. so the best thing to do for the poor thing was to give it to the vet lady. and now the chicks (grey male, named zen and a pearl female, named dotty) are doing great! they are 2 months old now. and i had to separate sully and jack because she wants to nest again. i didn't separate them on time though, because she is now sitting on 3 eggs, 2 of which are fertile.

DANG.. big ol story. sorry. lol.
