Anyone else trying to lower their environmental impact?

At one of my knitting classes one of my students said that each year she and her husband try to make it until THANKSGIVING before they turn on the heat! She said, "It gives us one more thing to be thankful for!!!" Nice. Only we're in North Eastern Ohio!!!!! Do you know how COLD it gets here? hahahhaa! So i am trying to hold out this year, but it's getting a little nippy!

I'm going to go put on another sweater!!!!!!

i hear you on that one. I am in west central illinois. It is getting into the 30's at night right now. I am holding out with the heat until I absolutely need to. It hasn't been that bad. Thats when you put an extra blanket on the bed or use a lap blanket when watching teley.

i dont' use an electric blanket. The roomie crocheted me a nice yarn blanket and I have a fleece blanket as well. When I need more heat I use both, less I use only the fleece.

As for electric blankets, I think it depends on the types of coils they use and such. We use electric heated matress pads at work and I and my clients love them.

And as for the pipes freezing... we use heat tape for the pipes. living in a mobile home it's necessary

ahhhh.

Well with the electric blankets, i thought it was the magnetic fields caused by the electric currents and being in close proximity to them that was the problem. And they do say on the tags that pregnant women should not use them.

I have started a yarn blanket, but i will probably give it away. I heard of a charity called Warm Up America and have interested my knitters in participating, so i have begun some squares.

The heated mattress pads sound lovely... for a massage! Divine! laugh

massage, facial, body wrap, and waxings is why we have it on there.

I could see the magnetic field as so forth.

Your spa sounds terrific. Wish I lived near you too.

We live in an older home and as things have needed replacing, we've gotten much more energy efficient items. We also replaced all the downstairs windows to more energy efficient.

We have a great recycling program in our town too so I recycle everything, including junk mail.

My husband recently also traded in his truck for a Geo Metro to save on gas. I was very proud of him as he loved that truck!

OH the hot water bottle brings back memories. My grandmother used to give me one at night in the winter to put my feet on. What a wonderful feeling that was!!! I think I need to go buy a hot water bottle. I do remember waking up one morning to a soaking wet bed and thinking I was a little too old for accidents, then found the water bottle empty!! LOL
