Can anyone help me. 10 pins are driving me crazy. I'm a 160 average bowler, but I've been throwing the ball better and hitting the pocket more. Now I'm besieged with 10 pin taps. I can't seem to be able to pick up 10 pin spares either. Does anyone have any tips on not leaving 10 pins and then on picking them up once I leave one. Please help.

Signed,
Desperate

A quick response here as I am headed out to a Father's Day Bowling tournament. Thanks for responding so quickly. I read the article you mentioned and will try those suggestions. I will be bowling on Tuesday so hopefully that will help. One more question about ten pins. Sometimes I leave a "ringing ten" but sometimes the 6 pin goes in front of the ten pin and just lays in the gutter. Is the adjustment the same for both. I've heard that called a "Flat Ten".

Yes, the suggestions are the same. The basic difference between a "ringing ten" and a "flat ten" is that one happens to deflect to the right more than the other. Ball speed is a key factor in leaving "flat tens."

Okay, continuing on about how to convert the 10 pin spare...
Regardless of anything, constant practice is how you will get consistent with picking up the 10 pin (and any spare, for that matter).
If you throw a straight ball to slight hook, you can probably get away with throwing your regular ball; if you have a medium to cranking curve, I would strongly suggest getting a plastic ball specifically drilled for no hook to use as your spare ball.
The reactive resin, particle, and to some degree, the urethane balls are designed to cut through oil and hook and they will more often than not, do a good job of it. Considering the oiling patterns today, you can develop more accuracy and consistency by throwing the ball straight at the ten pin rather than trying to hook it.
Here are some guidelines which you will have to fine tune to your comfort level: line your left foot up somewhere between the 30 and 35 board (2nd and 1st arrows from the left gutter) and aim for the 16, 17, or 18 boards keeping the ball on a straight line to the 10 pin. Remember that I am advocating throwing a straight ball rather than a hook of any kind. Once you have practiced and found the best placement for your feet and target that you should be aiming at, then the rest is practice, practice, practice to be consistent in your delivery and approach.
Hope this helps. Good luck to you and let me know how you progress.

I usually throw the ball with a medium hook and have been using my regular delivery to try to pick up the 10 pins. How is the best way to straighten out the shot. can it be done with your delivery or only with a plastic ball.

Hey ddb13: Some suggestions if you don't have a plastic bowling ball:
1) break your wrist - instead of keeping your wrist straight (if you use a wrist brace take it off), let it drop forward and don't put any lift on the ball when you release it;
2) take out one of your fingers from the hole - you will find that you won't be able to lift the ball as much when you release it;
3) throw the ball in a backup style release - unless you really twist your wrist to the right (of left if you're a left hander), you'll find that a reactive resin ball will not backup as much as you think it should.
Hope this helps.

Choc,

Thanks for the advise. I am rolling straighter at the 10 pin. I practiced a little and last league night I picked up 3 10 pins. Everyone on my team was surprised. There may be hope for me yet.
