I was just wondering if there is a 'correct' way to hold a crochet needle?

I hold it similarly to a pencil - the flat pinched between thumb and forefinger, with the 'stick' laid along the side of my forefinger.

I have a friend who holds it like she's holding it in her fist - the flat pinched between thumb and forefinger, but the stick 'inside' her fist, sticking out by her pinky.

If I recall correctly, my grandmother holds it yet a third way - the flat held between her thumb and the first knuckle of her middle finger, with her forefinger on top to control the threads.

So is there a 'right' way, or is it just however feels comfortable to you?

Hi Jennie smile

The way I teach is to hold it any way you want to and the way that will get the job done. I have run into several people that consider the "Pencil" hold the ONLY way to crochet and yet others who consider the "knife" hold the ONLY way to crochet. As far as I know the "crochet police" won't come get you if you hold it any way you want to, hahahahahahaha

I agree the one thing i was never fussy about because it can put a learner off, is insisting on holding a hook a particular way. I also teach people to hold however is comfortable for them. I find once they pick it up they sometimes change the way they hold it sometimes not.

I agree with jacquiw. You have to find the "hold" that is the most comfortable for you. I don't think there is no right or wrong way to hold it, as long as the job gets done, and the crocheter enjoys what he or she is doing! After all, isn't that the point of crocheting in the first place? For the enjoyment of it all?
