Hi all! We've been enjoying our 4-some (Euro. GF, Society & 2 orange-cheek waxbills) so much! I've been offering different fresh foods once or twice a week but the only thing they've ever touched is the hard-cooked egg. I've tried apples, banana, tomato, carrot, cantalope and they don't seem at all interested. I'm feeding a regular finch seed mix and spray millet and they seem to be thriving. Should I keep trying fresh foods or not worry about it? If it is important that they have a variety of fresh foods can someone suggest something or some way to offer it that would be more successful? TIA!

I would continue offering the fruits and vegetables, but make sure you are cutting or shredding it into tiny pieces for them to try. You certainly don't need to give 4 tiny birds very much, but just a bit each day. Sprinkle a few seeds over the fruit, so that when they grab a seed, they will get some of the fruit or veggie too.

Okay, thanks Mavis! I didn't think of sprinkling seed over it. I'll keep offering little bits at a time.

I have the same problem with the fresh fruits and veggies. My finches love a full leaf of romaine lettuce laid on the floor of the cage. I have had success with this slices of oranges and apples held onto the sides of the cages with clips. Have also found that they prefer their cuttlebone on the floor, rather than held on the side of the cage with a clip. But sometimes even on the clips, they won't touch the fruits. But always heartily enjoy the lettuce I give them, but only once a day. The rest of the time they get finch seed, millet and occasionally hard boiled egg with shells, and small mealworms. They all seem to love them.
