Hey all, I am new here, thought I should introduce myself. I currently have a 9 year old meyers parrot named Miss P. I have had bird(s) since I was 10, so I am not new to birds. I love to talk about them and look forward to hearing about everyone's experiences and also learning new things! Connie

In order to post a picture here, you have to have it located somehwere else & then use the image button below (when you are typing a reply) to put the URL. Then it will show up on this page.
My flock consists of 2 Congo African Greys, 5 tiels, 1 Lovebird, 1 Conure, 2 Doves, 1 Quail, & 10 finches.
I'm glad you've joined us here & look forward to meeting you at our next chat.

Hmm, I don't know that I am technilogically advanced enough to post pictures LOL! We bought a new printer a month ago and it took us a week to get it attached to the computer. Turned out we needed an updated driver. That is a whole other story though LOL. Sounds like you have a nice variety to your flock. What kind of finches do you have? I think the gouldians are so pretty, but have heard they are hard to keep. I would love to have some finches, but our house is so small and space is limited.

The finches are mostly my daughter's, but I have one pair of Green Singers. My daughter has 4 Zebras, 5 Societies and a Black Headed Nun. I took pictures of the Societies as they had babies and posted them all in an article that you can see by clicking here.

No - those baby finches are not tame. As soon as they could fly on their own, they learned to fly away. They probably are not quite as flighty as their parents, but they certainly are not tame. Glad you enjoyed their baby pictures.

HI Conniem, Just wanted to give you a welcome. This is a great board, and you will find Mavis to be very helpful host, and an experienced bird lover. Plus many others who are very helpful. Great pics, look forward to seeing your new baby. That will be quite a challenge. I have a Blue fronted Amazon Maggie a cheeky budgie named Ink Spot, and a newly adopted 20yr old Orange Winged Amazon, who kind of found us. Take Care Dawn

Hi Mavis, Barb had phoned us a few weeks back and asked if we were interested. Thought about it for awhile, phoned Pat who had Joey, and went to see him. This was her husband's bird, he died 3yrs ago, she was fond of him but birds were not her thing. He had all his basic needs met, but she didn't have the time to spend with him, and felt it better to find him a good home. This was his second home and she was the only one to handle him. He was such a gentle bird with her, so that was hopeful. What made my final decision was that if she couldn't find a home for him, she had thought of putting him to sleep. I think maybe this bird also has some sad memories of the husbands death. I didn't want to see a lovely bird put down. So here is another challenge. This is his second week here. We were all talking to him and he would put his head down to be scratched, I was just taking things really slow, not fast enough for him obviously. 4 days after he arrived he was jumping at me to pick him up. I put his stand into the living room, and after one time of being on it he gets down from his cage and walks into the living room to find his stand. He has adapted much faster than I was told he would, he is a very sweet bird. I really don't know what to expect from an older bird, he seems such a gentleman compared to my bratty Maggie. lol It's just getting him used to our kind of fast paced lifestyle, and noise all day . Can you teach an old bird new tricks, they tell me you can. Take Care Dawn

Hello Connie,
I am also very new to this site. I have had a yellow naped amazon(Bert) for about a week and 1/2. My family fell in love with him quickly. He loves to be scratched and I have perched him once by using a perch from his cage. I am very new to this so any hints would help wonders. How to get him to trust me more is tricky. I have a few nips to prove it. But I keep going back for more. He loves to eat from my hand but as you say this house is so new and loud. The owner of mine also pasted away and the family said Bert loved to cuddle so I'm anxious to see if he will take that on with me. Well I could talk forever. See you, Kim R.

Hi Kim and congratulations on your new addition! Sounds like you are doing well, you just have to give him some time to settle in and learn to trust you. Figure out what are his favorite foods and offer them to him by hand. He will learn that you always have good things for him! Amazons are such clowns! I think they have great personalities, I am looking forward to hearing more about Bert! Connie

Dawn, just read your post..I have a previously owned Panama Amazon who is about 25 yrs old and I know what you mean about them being a sort of "gentleman" LOL! He's an old fella, kind of stuck in his ways..takes several naps during the day and loves to have his head scratched! Sometimes when he is on my shoulder at night watching the tv, I scratch the top of his head and he scratches the underside with his own foot and falls fast asleep! :rolling:

Hi! I've posted once or twice before but haven't been a regular. I love reading about your birds! We have a 9-year old cockatiel (Rufus), a 4-year old budgie (Dandelion) and we're guessing at maybe an 8-year old eastern rosella parakeet (Mango). I'm always amazed at their individualism. Rufus is a stuffy old man who pays no attention to anyone but me and will allow Mango to feed him but no other activities although she tries her best to entice him, nudge, nudge, wink, wink! Dandelion would like to play with the other two but they hate him. He has a 50+ word vocabulary with numerous phrases and is highly entertaining.
Mango came to us from a piano teacher's laundry room. Her daughter had brought her home unannounced and Mango did not like the already present cockatoo, macaw and African grey! They tried to keep her for several months but it just didn't work out so my daughter and I bought her and have been working with her for almost 5 years. She is extremely shy but will take food from our hands finally. I'm still working to get her to step up though.
Nice to meet you all!

Lizzy - I'm glad you decided to tell us about your birds. It sounds like you have a wonderful flock there and they will provide you and your family with many years of enjoyment. I'm sure that your amazing patience with Mango will one day finally convince her to step up - although she is obviously quite a pet anyway.

Thanks Mavis! Mango is quite an outstanding pet in her own right. She has learned to go into the cage on command which is a great help when she is so reluctant to step onto a finger or hand, or extra perch either. She's quite the adventurer and I often catch her waddling off across the floor - she climbs down from the cage and tries to sneak off but always gets busted! I exclaim "NO! Bad Bird!" and look extremely displeased and she hurries back to the cage, climbs up and puts herself in, sulking in a corner!

HI Lydia,
Yes Joey is sooo different, to Maggie the brat. Which is also I think why we are enjoying them so much. Joey being the mature bird, they have so many different characteristics. I am slowly getting them together, and so far so good. Take Care Dawn

A big welcome to this site Lizzy. You have a nice variety of birds, :music: and seems like Mango is coming alone just great. Your patience will be greatly rewarded, and it seems Mango is taking that step towards giving you that trust which is great. Would love to see pictures sometime.

Thank you Dawn! I'll try to link a couple pics here. There's one of Mango with Rufus, and a separate one of Dandelion. Hello Dawn, I have had Miss P since she was 3. She is such a nice bird. She is a very clean girl, she has a bath daily! Most of the time in her water bowl (as soon as you put clean water in her cage in the morning) and sometimes I give her a pie pan to bathe in, sometimes she will get in the shower with me. She also loves to be blown dry with the hair dryer. She will sit on my shoulder and if I turn it off too soon she will EEKKK in my ear until I turn it back on LOL. LOL! What a great picture! My first cockatiel, Chiquita, also loved to shower with me and enjoyed the blow-dryer. Rufus, on the other hand, prefers to be dirty it seems. I wash him off in the shower from time to time and he tolerates it. Mango enjoys her bathtub too but doesn't get as soaked as your bird!

HI Lizzy, Lovely pictures. The birds are just gorgeous, and such lovely markings and colors. I love the cholla perch, if that's what you call it. :rolling: My Maggie has them as foot toys and just loves chewing on them. Take Care Dawn

Hi Conniem, Thanks for telling me about Miss. P. She is adorable looking wet bird. Isn't it nice that they love to have baths. I have always taken Maggie in the shower everyday with me, except she likes sometimes to attack the shower curtins. She thinks that is pretty neat. Now I have started taken in Joey too, he thinks it's pretty neat. I started of by spraying now we have graduated to the shower. Take Care Dawn

Thanks for the compliments Dawn! They are pretty birds. I don't know what the proper name is for that "perch" but I understand it's made from dead cactus. At first they wouldn't go near it but I had fun sticking bits of food in the holes and they couldn't resist checking it out then! Now it's a favourite place to climb and chew.

HI Lizzy, Like I mentioned, my birds have them in various foot toy chews, they call them Cholla. They love them, but I have not seen them in a perch. I guess birds just have to get used to different things. That was a good way though, spaghetti would be a good one string it through. Messy and sticky. But the birds love it.
