Thank you, Susan, for the "Fall Growing Tips" update. I have several Phals that are still outside. One already has 3 new buds! How long should I keep them outside? I live in the Ohio Valley and it will get below freezing at some point. Thanks!
Phals are warmth lovers and will resent any temperatures under about 50 degrees. Around 60 at night is the temperature needed to initiate flowering in the fall. If possible it's ideal to leave them in the cooler nighttime temperatures until the inflorescences are around 6 inches tall. Congratulations on getting this one to start!
I live in No. Cal. and it is mid-October. Our temeratures, at night have just begun to drop into the low 50's but days remain in the high 70's- low 80's. Is it time to bring the orchids in doors? I don't see any new spikes yet and am not sure how long to leave outside?
Low 50s is too cool for Phals; you might want to move them to some kind of protected area at night. It usually takes about two weeks to encourage them to flower with the night temperatures in the 60s. A month is probably better.
