HI guys, I came home today and Redfish had a little tear in his fin. AT first I got upset thinking that it must be fin rot but then as I watched him I saw him get caught on the little plant in his tank. So, now I am thinking he got his tail caight on the plant. Needless to say the plant is gone but I just want to get your opinion on the matter. I truly thought that he was doing great. He eats a lot and is playful. His fins have a bunch of clear on them, which I thought is growth....correct? I thought someone somewhere had said that sometimes that is the beginning of finrot but from here and a other placs I thought that black on the tips means finrot??

Should I get him some Melafix to try and help? As of now he has conditioner, aquarium salt and a little Jungle Fungus Clear in his water.....what do you think?

Thanks so much!!

Wel lif it is fin rot the ends of his fins could look -for lack of a better description- shreaded. That part of the fin would be uneven and frayed. This usually happens because their water is getting a little too dirty, so I suggest starting with a water change unless you have done that already.

I did post not to long ago a website about fin and tail rot, perhaps you go to that site -it has pictures and see what you can find out.

Say it with me:

salt and clean water!

That's all you need...really! It's likely not fin rot but probably just a shreded fin. Medication wouldn't be necessary, and would probably add extra stress to the fish.

Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Sounds great, since that is already EXACTLY what I do!! I do a water change at least once a week if not more if I see it is needed and I have always used salt!

I agree with elise. I doubt it is finrot, probably just a tear from the plant. It *could* develop into finrot, but given your routine with his water and salt, I doubt that. Keep up the good work!!

Oh, you could also add a little extra stress coat, or similar product. It helps form their slime coats which can help them heal.
