We were unsure if we were going to homeschool and we talked it over and my son decided to try again since a new principal was coming in. Well to make a long story short, same old stuff just a different year so to speak. He has been in school 3 weeks, academically he is an A+ student but the same junk is going on, hitting, verbal abuse, potty mouth etc. What I need help with is I want to pull him out, this is nonsense and in my eyes kids or my kid does not need this in school. I do have a curriculum picked waiting for it to be delivered. I live in Elko, NV and I will be filling out the Notification of Intent to Homeschool. How long do I have to wait to get him out of there ? I stupidly thought that things would be better but they are not, I am honestly terrified that something bad (he tells me and I have seen it where now "groups" of kids beat on other kids and alls that happens is that they are given a talking to ONLY)will happen. This makes me sick and I am really kicking myself because I feel like I put him there, anyway how much trouble will I get into if I just pull him out and start teaching him ? Any info, suggestions or anything will be greatly appreciated.

I found this online. Looks like you can turn in your notice and withdraw at the same time. You don't actually have to have the materials "in hand", but you will have to provide a curriculum. If you aren't ready yet with all your paperwork you can also count up sick days and simply use those on the front end IMO. Truant officers are usually far too busy until someone's been out a significant period of time so I'd take him out and make sure I get things together as promptly as possible.

WOW, Thank You I will be reading everything on that page with a sharp eye. I don't want to do it dramitically, I just really want him out of there and I want to do it legally. I am really hoping this will help some other Mother or Father who has a initial "gut feeling" please follow it, in my opinion 9.99 times out of 10 your "gut feeling" is right on target.

While you are waiting for your other curriculum to come in - you can go ahead and get started on a book for reading, and doing current event stuff for social studies online.

That way he won't feel like he is twiddling his thumbs at home, and you two can kind of ease into the homeschooling day. Then when the rest of the curriculum comes in you just add it into your schedule!

Good luck!

I am glad everyone else answered!

Had I been around I would have said pull him out immediately and file your notice of intent that day. If you need anything else (list of curriculum or subjects to teach) you can put those together pretty easily using any scope and sequence found online.

Good luck!!

Eva - dont forget to allow him some "decompression" time to get used to being home and to allow you both to get used to the idea of homeschooling.

Thanks Meg, I do have the intent form all filled out, have decided to use switched on schoolhouse which should be here this week, and tomorrow we go to the school district hand in the intent form and from there to the school. SOS has a placement test that I downloaded and today when he got home I told him that tomorrow he would be doing the test (figured this could fill in until the software gets to me) and he was overly excited couldn't wait to do it so I let him do 2 units.....wanted to save some for tomorrow too. On one hand I am a little sad about this but on the other hand I am not going to leave him in a bad situation. He had a really good teacher this year but the school as a whole stinks. Thanks for all the help and I am sure I will be back with a ton of questions, hope I don't drive you crazy.

I take it the bullying situation didn't improve?

I was really hoping things were going to work out.

How are you doing BTW?

Hi Michelle I am doing fantastic. No the bullying has not improved and the words that come out of these kids mouth is shocking. In the past year I have had to explain alot of things to my son that I really didn't want to. Now don't get me wrong I know he will find out things but honestly he is really too young. At first I thought maybe I was being a bit of overprotective since he is my last baby but as he came home asking more and more about what this word means and the everyday fighting I just thought I can't do it. I feel like I am sending him into a pit everyday, not a good feeling plus he asked both my husband and I last Friday...."Is it normal to feel scared most of the time" ?

I did get his papers done and he is offcially out of school and into homeschool. I was very scared to do this but my SOS came today and I may drive you all crazy with questions but I feel really good. I feel in control of what happens to my son now. Yes I know I can't control everything and I'm not a control freak but I mean I CAN control what words he can hear and the only fighting will probably be between him and I , hehehehehehe.

Thanks for asking and I hope all is well with you

Eva
