we go to the gym almost every day. and we spend a few hours there when we go. our gym has a free nursery available too. it's huge, and one of my friends uses it and loves the staff. the gym is the only place i can go where i'm not bombarded with little kids and babies (still have trouble emotionally sometimes when i see little ones). it is my safe place.

but last night, we were lifting weights, and i heard a giggle. not an adult either. i turned, and right behind me was a young woman holding a baby probably a year old. the girl proceeded to sit at a machine and start doing her exercises. the machines have weights up to 200 pounds, some of them have more on them. they are not safe for little ones to be around. and if the girl lost her balance, the kid could have been really hurt. but she continued to try to work out and do her stuff with the kid in her lap.

my husband noticed i was upset by this. i've been doing better lately getting over it, but i felt violated. my last safe place with no reminders of infertility, and here's some chick coming into my safe zone with her baby. i got so upset, i started having hot flashes.

i would have complained to the employees, but there were trainers walking all around who didn't say a word to them. so i guess they didn't care. *shrug*

oh, well. at least she was working all the baby weight off. i guess.

i did learn something great though. the fire department guys come in on saturday mornings to work out. i can guaruntee i'll be there next week!

[color:"blue"] Have you thought of maybe going to a different gym? Maybe you could get your own exercise
equipment and not have to be faced with breeders.

We have a treadmill, bike, and stairmaster at home. Saves time not having to travel to and from the gym, too.

I'd say something to the management. I agree with you that the child could get hurt, and they wouldn't want to be liable or face a lawsuit if anything happened. Sounds like the trainers were afraid to say anything that might anger the mother.

it's the only time i've seen it happen, and we've been members almost a year (go about 6 days a week). if i see it happen again, i will say something. i'm wondering if they just showed up and no one was at the nursery? i don't know. i've never seen them before, so i think they might have been using a guest pass. i hope they don't sign up. or if they do that they figure out there's a nursery.

there is a new gym going in just a couple of blocks away from this one, and it's going to be huge. i'm sure a lot of people will be switching soon.

i don't mind the nursery. some of my friends use it. but i just worry about the safety when you stick a child that young on a machine. the kiddo could get squished fingers or could get tangled up in the pulleys on the machines if she wanted to.

we used to work out at home, but we do different things throughout the week. so using the gym's equipment is better for us. but like i said, if i see someone with a child that young on the equipment again, i will say something. it's just not safe. and i want to keep my safe zone (i won't mention that because i'm sure the gym people could care less).

anyway, thanks for listening.

Hi Holles
I think you should definitely complain to the management, maybe the trainers aren't aware of the gym's health and safety policy. A lot of company's insurance policies don't cover a business if they behave in a reckless way as you described so you will be doing them a favour if you report it. I complained at my gym, when I saw a woman changing a nappy directly on the seats in the changing room - another health and safety point. Within a week there were signs up everywhere and they created an adults only changing area. Don't wind yourself up about it, take action, you will feel better.

That is so gross. I really hate it when I am in the supermarket and I can smell a soiled nappy. These shopping centeres have baby changing rooms but the parents are to lazy to take them there - they would rather fill the whole supermarket with the aroma of baby poop!

[color:"blue"] Me too.

My gym... should I ever lose this blasted !@#$% cast and get back there... has major rules about kids in the exercise areas. No one under age 12 and those 12-17 MUST be with an adult.

A gym is no place for kids; supervised or not. It only takes a second for a child to be out of sight and up to mischief. Gyms have lots of heavy equipment and metal edges which aren't suitable for kids. Parents who don't leave their child(ren) with a sitter or at the nursery are nothing short of negligent in my book. Sometimes i feel that people bring their kids to places and then expect other patrons to 'look after them'. Why oh why do these people not realise that their life is not 'exactly the same' as before they had children????? Something's gotta give.....
