Have you ever thought about doing some challenges here? For example, one week you could do Macro photography challenge, and the next you could do something else? I think it'd be fun and it's something I'd enjoy. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I'm reviving this thread, because I think this is a great idea- I'm just getting into photography, and I would love to do challenges, even if I have no idea what I'm doing! I was thinking about entering this contest, which could make for a really cool challenge- that way we could share critiques and ideas about each others shots, and who knows, maybe one of us will even win- how cool would that be?! Anyone interested?

Hi Stephanie!

Oh at last! I am so glad you've revived this thread and you're interested in Photography challenges, even some at BellaOnline too - It'll be a wonderful way to develop your photographic skills, grow creatively and it's such a great way for us to share our photography!

Great news is I'm planning on creating a BellaOnline Photography Challenge for all of us here! The challenge will be set monthly, and it'll feature three different categories/subjects to choose from, for instance one month could be: flowers, cold, and old buildings...

You can then choose to work on these however you like, you can plan to work on a different category each week of the month, or just stick on exploring one for the whole month. Ill also write an article part way through the monthly challenge, with extra hints and tips, and extra creative ideas for you on those challenges. Toward the end of the month we can all share how weve got on by posting our pictures in the forum here and we can all get together in the BellaOnline chat room, share our work and discuss how we got on!

Would be great to know your feedback on this idea, would you be interested in a monthly photography challenge? Let me know your thoughts! grin

I think a monthly challenge would be great- I was just looking at the photos entered in the flower contest I mentioned, and I got so inspired to take more pics! The best thing about doing challenges in here is we can all give and receive feedback, which I'm really looking for as a beginner! Have you been into photography for awhile?

Hi Stephanie! Great, Im glad youre up for photography challenges here at BellaOnline, I hope many others shall be too, and we can all get going very soon! And yes, as you say it will be great supportive place to get feedback on our photography here, especially when youre just starting out. I always find it very inspiring and motivating looking at other peoples photographs, and you learn so much that way. Ooh, I cant wait to get started now!

As for me, Ive been photographing for a while yes! Since I was young, around 12 years old I think, I was given a compact 35mm film camera for my birthday and that really kicked it off for me, a friend and I spent the whole summer that year taking endless photographs of the ducks at our local pond! Naturally being at school studying art, painting and drawing was on the curriculum rather than photography so it wasnt until my late teens that I really took photography more seriously.

I joined an evening class that was invaluable! I learnt a lot about composition and looking at photographers of the past and how they created their pictures, and the course got me into black and white film photography, using a darkroom in developing your own negatives and making your own prints. Now Im really working on perfecting these traditional practices, there's so much too learn and it's great fun!

How about you Stephanie, do you use a digital camera? Ive got a little on that I use all the time and I have to say, they are great to get started on too!

Oh and btw, I love photographing flowers, its an all time favourite subject of mine smile Ive seen the competition link youve put up there, lovely idea to get started with.

Always read terms and conditions of competitions well so you know exactly the rules of the comp and where you stand with the rights to your work before entering. Sometimes when you enter a competition, you can use your copyright to the photographs youve taken, which I think is a bad thing and personally Id avoid such comps!

My local newspaper ran a photography competition recently for photographs of wildlife, but one of the clauses was that by entering your photos that made them free to use your pics in their future publications! So I guess that competition was giving the newspaper a big stockpile of local wildlife photos free to use in the future!

I had a quick look at the rules for the competition youre interested in and its a bit ambiguous about copyright, so Id recommend if youre planning to enter to get in touch with them just so they can clarify things for you smile
