Our tenet abandoned 6 kittens and they are really shy and really hungry. What can I feed them? I doubt they are fully weaned.

Thanks

Hi Samten,

Here's a link that should help you...

Orphaned Puppy and Kitten Care

I would recommend starting with the KMR kitten milk replacer. I'm not sure if it's available at pet stores, but it should be available at veterinarian's offices/animal hospitals. If/when the kittens are about 3 weeks old, you can water down some canned kitten food for them. The above link has some really good advice.

Thanks!

They were older then I thought just dehydrated and very hungry.

I took them to my Homeschool support meeting and 4 of the 6 found homes and the other two went to a vets office to be nursed back to health for a week or so and on to good homes.

2 of the smaller ones were having trouble walking at first but they seemed to do a bit better the longer they were out.

All in all a happy ending!

baby food and baby formula, we have nursed many a stray kitten and a runt of our own using them. Make sure the baby formula has no added iron and the good is the 1st foods, meat.

Yes, I forgot to mention baby food. When I used to work for my vet we would recommend chicken baby food for cats and dogs, kittens and puppies who wouldn't eat anything else or who needed nursed back to health. The baby food can't be a permanent food, however, because it doesn't contain taurine - an amino acid that is an essential dietary nutrient for cats.

How nice of you to take the kittens in, many animals are dumped, more then we will ever know. That is one of the worse things someome can do, but as always 'there' excuse is ..'if I take them to the shelter, they will just be killed' I have heard stories from people, who will throw them out on the freeway, dump them at an area where their are Feral cats that people fed, many end up dead, the feral group have there own 'Family' & many won't accept any new cats, so they just chase them out, to die of stravation, or for coyote food. 'There are worse things then death' Yes I'm an Animal Rescurer, so I see & 'hear' many sad stories, but many happy ones too.
I hope you are able to keep tract of these kittens to make sure they will be spayed & neutered, so the cycle doesn't keep going. In my area they have been spaying kittens as early as 8 wks, many people say ...YES! I wouldn't have an animal that wasn't altered, but they lose track of time & before you know it the femals are pregant, or the males have 'sprayed' all over the house, so he is 'let out' or he 'has run away' looking for females & end up getting killed. For every kitten born a cat dies, there arent enough homes for them all. I will never forget a man I was talking to who though kittens & puppies, that were just given 'away' or 'gotten rid of' in front of a store was just great for him,he saved money on buying his snakes food. Also many people love kittens, untill they turn into cats, then they are dumped, or just 'let outside'. In my area with all the building on our beautifull mountians, the coyotes are coming down looking for food, but you try telling the people who ...just have to have 'homes with a view'. The head of our shelter & a few people from rescue groups have had meeting with these people twice, still the people believe their pets are being 'stolden'. But you took in & found homes for all six kittens, something the owners of the mother should of done, wonder if they know that a cat can come back in heat 2 wks. after having kittens? If you know these people & end up with kittens you have to 'bottle-fed' or teach them how to eat, many people have given you good advice, BUT NO COWS MILK. Good luck & thanks for having such a big heart. Pegi

We found the mama KITTEN and we had to take her to the pound because she was so skinny and needed more care then we could give.

She was 9 months old!

The kittens themselves all went to loving homes in sets of two's with the exception of the smallest two and both started out with the vet friend and one stayed and the other went to a good home. All are doing well, gaining weight and eating like litte pigs. Most important all are healthy and will be fixed when they are old enough.

The vet had the final say on their age- 4 weeks when found.

I have had this situation. There is a Mothers Milk replacement you can get at a Feed Store, or mix up very mild form of Formula and place it near their hid out. Can you catch them at all. I have a tiny one the Mother just led to my place last week, he hides under the house. Fortunatly he's eatting solids, but I need to catch him before the winter freeze.

Robin, I don't know how I got your message & I don't want to sound like a 'know it all' or a *B* but I have been in Animal Rescue over 30yrs, run a non-profit in my town & yes have a house full of 'bottle babies'...their always seems to be one that you just can't let go of...LOL. Have you tryed to find any rescue groups in your town? I know some of the 'volunters' can be 'crabby' just listen to them & go on to another one, who is much nicer & willing to help you. Many shelters will lend you a cat trap to catch your kitten or kittens...one thing...DON'T...DON'T EVER LET A FERAL CAT OUT OF THE TRAP!! you will never catch them again, so you have to catch your kittens on a day when you know the vet is open the next day. You might try to 'tame' the kitten, one way one of our volunteres use is after the 'feral' kitten has had its shots, been altered, they let him out in a 'spare' room...ya who has that??? then she goes in their with one of her cats, sits on the floor & just pets & talks with her cat, ignoring the 'Feral' kitten, she says it takes about 2 wks for the feral kitten to come for some 'pets' & 'scratches'. If the kitten is young they seem to be easier to tame, but just don't let the kitten to live out by him self, if you can't or don't have the time, trap him & take him to the shelter,if you do nothing in a yr you will have 50 'wild' cats around your house. I know its not fair for you to be put in the possision to take on someone eles 'throw away', so you be better them them & do what they should have done. I find if the kitten is old enough to know 'what food is' I buy a piece of fried chicken from my local store, that usually gets them into the trap. Many shelter will loan you a trap, yes you can keep the kitten you have trapped, but return the trap for someone else to use, you know not to give kittens cows milk, but goats milk is ok or a mixer of KMR & goats milk, when you have 14 kitttens to feed, the goats milk helps the KMR go farther.
Robin keep me up to date, let me know what happened, my E-mail is yellmouth@adelphia.net.hope to hear from you soon, Hugs. Pegi

You can find kitten forumla at Walmart, or any drugstore, country store, etc. I found an abandoned kitten a year ago last august and my neighbor gave me some goat starter formula powder and taught me how to fix it.I found a tiny bottle at a local drugstore and fed her for four weeks, and then crushed kitten chow and mixed forumla with it, letting her lapp it up. The kitten weighed 5 ounces. She is now a year old and weighs almost 14 pounds. You can read about her and how I took care of her, here.

If all else fails Pet Milk is what my kitten loved the most. He was really small when I got him from the pet store and I dont believe he was actually weaned either. He is a big fan of the pet milk. Carnations brand. He drank that for at least 6 months along with soft fancy feast. He doesnt care for any beef products. Anything but beef. no fish until 1 year at least and then not to much. He also loves his Kitten Chow by Purina. The vet said he is a big baby!

that's so sweet of you to nurse the kittens to health-- are you intending on keeping them all? I just adopted a 3-month year old kitten and am just obsessed with her-- I am worried about all the health care costs however as she seems to have worms and an ulcer in her eye already:(

Also-- my kitten seems to love wet cat food but I think she gets diarrhea from it-- what would you suggest doing to get rid of it b/c she won't eat anything else

Mix the wet cat food with good quality dry food, a little at a time. I switched my cats a long time ago from wet to Scienc Diet and they LOVE the Science Diet. Good Luck to you and the babies. ;-)
