I had a car in high school - my dad's old beat up Datsun. It came with a few pricetags, however. I paid for gas from babysitting money and had to help my mom get my younger brothers to and from school and other events. Seemed like a worth-while trade-off. I also had the keys taken away when I bucked the rules!
BTW, that car passed from me to my 2 younger brothers and lasted until the bottom rusted out. The only new cars where for my folks - as it should be!
