Save The Planet http://jimcolyer.com/@tracks/20/lofi.mp3

I wrote "Save The Planet" because I am a songwriter. I am faced with defending the message of my song. I am not a fanatic. I recall Al Gore's book about the environment. It was so technical, it was unreadable. It was funny when George Bush 41 referred to Gore as "Ozone Man" because of his preoccupation with the ozone layer. I have heard the ozone layer repairs itself. Maybe. The big issue with Gore is global warming. This is the tendency for man-made carbon dioxide to trap heat in Earth's atmosphere. The fear is, the earth will be heated to a point that its polar caps melt, inundating coastal cities. Unchecked, Earth could become a hell like Venus although we would be dead long before. The problem I have is that geologists say we are between Ice Ages. If another Ice Age is inevitable, might not global warming serve as a device for heating the globe? Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere may trap the sun's energy and prevent glaciers from flowing north and south to drive the planet's population toward the equator. It sounds crazy. We are trying to figure out whether we will burn up or freeze to death, whether we are going to drown or die of thirst because all the water is locked up in ice. If global warming is taking place (and apparently it is), I am not sure it is an entirely bad thing. It got pretty cold in Nashville last winter. If it is a bad thing, I am not sure that man in his ingenuity will not find a remedy. I stay mainstream.

I would like to save the planet. Progress is preventing me. The almighty dollar rules! We will probably all die from murder, pollution, diseases, the weather, sinkholes, hungry animals, etc. Most of these will be done or brought on by mankind. We will eliminate ourselves in the name of progress. Can we say Atlantis? Then, the planet can slowly begin to repair itself, but there will be nobody left. Hopefully some trees will survive, but last month people started panicking with hurricane season approaching, and I saw quite a few trees being cut down. <img src="/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> My recommendation is to plant daffodils, they are quite hardy, drought and salt tolerant. Maybe they will be the last ones standing, making this planet a more beautiful place even if there will be no one around to enjoy them. In the late winter, of course.

Jim,

I'm wondering if you've seen the Al Gore movie "Inconvenient Truths". It was made to present the case in a manner understandable to non-scientists. The problem is that slow progress is not even close to enough. Did you see the recent news predicting that the population of food fish in the ocean would crash within 50 years? An excellent books is Buckminster Fuller's "Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth". I hope it's still in print. He saw the earch as a sort of egg for humanity. Like an egg, it came equipped with a certain amount of food (energy) to get us through to a point where we must be able to survive on what we take in, the sun's energy, as delivered to us every day. Genetic adaptations are slow, not nearly fast enough to deal with climatic change at the rate is is now occurring. More later.

The earth has been cooler in the past and warmer too. Climatologists say this is most likely a normal cyclical event.
