I have several phals that I keep in different windows in my home. I have seen several spike and then when they start to bud, the buds kinda dry up and fall off! Any idea what I can do? Even when I purchase new phals in bloom, the existing blooms do fine, but the buds will wither after awhile. Thanks!

What you are describing is called bud blast and is most likely caused by low humidity, smoking in the house, or a gas in the air (possibly air pollution in your area). Is there a draft on the plants from your heating system? You might experiment and see if you have the same problem when you do not have your heating system in operation.

If buds are dropping from several plants that share the same environment then you may be able eliminate plant problems and look to environmental problems. Placement of warm growing orchis by Windows can be difficult in that the area could be too cold and drafty thus causing the bud blast. Also check the lighting for the area. Phals should do well in bright indirect light and kept at or above 60 degrees. Nursery grown phals are frequently potted to make the plant appear in good health for the blooming (and sale) period. Inspection of the roots may give you the clues you need. IF you find a clump of spagnum moss under the plant it will probably be surrounded by dead or dying roots. This practice keeps the plant wet but when left too long the continually damp moss will usually rot the roots. If lucky you will other roots to work with when you repot it. Be sure to use critter-free med to large bark maked "for orchids" and add some perlite or cleaned pebbles to keep the air spaces in the mix as it ages. Without those spaces the plant remains too wet too long causing root rot. Good growing.

Follow-up! Thanks Susan and Jaque! I moved all of my plants outside for the summer. Most responded well (I live in the Ohio Valley and we have plenty of humidity in the summer months). Unfortunately, I did not plan for the big storms (2) that blew thru and lost over half of my babies! Those left are doing fine. Once it starts getting cold outside I'll bring them back into the house.

Thanks again.
