Is there a difinitive set of rules for the table?

So far my kids ask to be excused, can't leave unless finished and wipe their own area.

What about napkins and elbows adn swinging legs? Is that just a preference thing or is there a etiquette list for table manners when at resturants and at home?

Thanks in Advance.

I am not sure about a correct set of rules. But at our house, everyone takes their own plate to the sink even my 2 yr old. Everyone stays and helps put everything off of the table. When in a resturant, I make sure my children are not distubing others. That is a huge thing for me. They are not allowed to kick the seat or look over the back of the bench at other people.

If the napkin is cloth, it should always go in the lap of the person (allowances are made for children under the age of 2 - especially when spaghetti is concerned!) <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

There is no real rule on paper napkins - just keep them handy!

Elbows should never go on the table - long standing rule.

Feet kicking - if little one's feet do not reach the floor, the best thing is for them to place them on the rungs of the chair (that is what they are there for - as well as stability) or to cross them at the ankles. They should really not kick - but it is so hard for little ones to stay completely still at a dinner table! I say if they are behaving in all other ways, they are not actually kicking anything or making noise with their feet - let them swing away! It gives them the chance to get a little bit of energy out. However - if this is likely to "ramp them up" then go ahead and put a stop to it. - You know your kids best!

There are rules for table manners, not just for children but for adults as well. You can find them an almost any book discussing the topic and on certain webpages.

The rules are basically derived from those forms of behavior that prevent others from enjoying their meal.
