Women in academia--whether or not they have a spouse/children or ever plan to have a spouse/children-- are generally paid less than men of similar rank, are promoted more slowly, and receive tenure at lower rates than men.
Studies have shown that these lower rates of pay, promotion and tenure are related to the employers perception that women will eventually take time out from academic life to pursue a family life.
