Peel back the covers a little bit, Dave, and you'll see that it was the Bush administration which removed money from the Federal Budget for fixing the levees.

The Bush administration cut the funding - not the state or local government - the Bush administration!

"The local and state governments are more to blame." No, they aren't.

It was a failure on all levels of government, but the primary blame belongs on the Bush administration and the Department of Homeland Security (Homeland Security?!?!). Big disasters are declared "federal disasters" precisely because they are too big for smaller local governments to handle. That's what FEMA used to do, when it wasn't run by lobbyiests and Bush cronies.

I don't want to "trash Bush!" I want him to get his act together! And, it's really hard not to blame him when he is to blame!

The local and state gov. misspent millions of dollars previously earmarked for the levees. If the feds had spent more it is not clear it would have done any good. You are right though that there were failures at all levels of gov.

The Bush administration cut the funds for maintenance of the levees from the Federal budget, more each year since Bush took office.

Actually Bush has spent way too much each year. The budget is out of control.

It's not only the spending that's screwed up by the Bush (lack-of) Administration, it's how the priorities have been set, too. Lots and LOTS of money for the oil industry. No money for infrastructure like levees.
