Does anyone know if it is possible to run a small fresh floral business out of your home? I worked for three years as a designer and really at this stage of my life (over 50) I just want a simple type of business. I don't want to set the world on fire, just want to make a small living. I just don't know how you would go about having the availabilty of fresh flowers on hand, and how would I advertise? Has anyone here ever run such a type of business? I feel that I am very good at what I do and just don't want to work any longer for a shop. I was really not paid what I was worth. I was paid $7.00 per hour and I ran the whole shop and was the lead designer. I worked my butt off and never was rewarded for it. For that type of salary I could do this for myself. The three floral shops in my town are terrible to each other. It is tooooo competative here. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks a bunch!!!!

Running a home business is definately doable. You have to be able to go out and get the work. My friend and I started our own floral business seven months ago. Since then, we have been doing really well. We did the Brides to Be show and have since booked ten weddings. We have also done funeral work and silk arrangements for orders. As far as getting the flowers are concerned, once you have registered your business and have a tax ID number, you can buy from wholesalers when you need to. We go to the wholesaler and pick up what we need when we get an order. I has worked out excellent for us. We also created our own website that has pictures of our work on it.

hope this helps a bit.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and this is my first thread.
I do flower arrangements from home, too. Nowadays, the fees to rent a shop to run a flower shop is killing the business. That's why more and more women chose to run them from home. But the problem is, to be able to be successful in that business, you need to have a customer database. If not, your business will pick up very slowly.
Since, you've worked in a florist shop before, I'm sure a lot of customers already know you for your designs and works. So , I think you can make it.
Good Luck!

I've also been thinking about started a side business in floral arrangement making. I don't need to make alot of money off of it. Just enough to pay my car insurance and gas money ever month. About $200 a month. I work and am in college right now. The advantage to having a floral business would be that I don't have to leave me house to do it. I can study, do some florals, study, do more florals, and study some more. I can bring my work with me and I can choose when to do it depending on my classes. The thing I'm afraid of is that I will either not generate enough customers per month to pay my bills or I'll generate too much and I won't be about to keep up with it and college.

I love making florals and I think overall it's a good idea. I have also thought about renting a booth in a craft show that is hosted in a high schools in my area. Currently I only know of one high school that hosts a craft show once a year. This would not be enough to pay my bills for the next year. How would I find more craft shows in my area? Do you think making an online floral buisness is better for me, doing craft shows, or both?

my concerns are a little different. I am in NYC and I would like to start my business as a mobile venture. However, I have the problems of licensing. there is no such thing as a vendors license anymore. what the city has is a closed waiting list for vendors. which makes my business idea almost dead. I still am going to try and have this floral business based in my home i'm just not sure how I am going to pull it off. I welcome all advice Please.

I live in NYC too and my floral design business is based out of my home. Business hasn't been so bad. My only concern is sufficient space. But, so far, I've had no problem with my flower suppliers, etc. Everything is the same as having a studio, only I'm missing the foot traffic, high rent, high insurance, etc. Summerstan813, If you need more information, you can contact me directly, and I can tell you how I was able to do it.
