One of the fastest growing product lines today is in the category of men's skin care. Ive been keeping a close watch on the marketing strategies used to hawk these products, especially the men's facial moisturizers. I am wondering if the gentlemen shall need pay as much for these, as the ladies pay for their moisturizers. As well, I am awaiting, no anticipating, the ads for men's moisturizers, featuring products hailed as containing miracle age-reversing ingredients. Im wondering if terms such as, turn back the hands of time, and repair sun damaged skin!, will be used, in those ads. I am wondering if companies will insult the intelligence of the male consumer, as they have insulted, and continue to insult the intelligence of the female consumer. Come to think of it, the fact that I have seen no such ads being displayed as yet in the media, may be most telling! Jeannine Schenewerk www.intouchwithjeannine.com

Hi Jeannine, That's a great question. My favorite site for Men's skin care (see my article on razor burn -- http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art26355.asp--lists the following as their top-selling products: Eye Rescue Formula Advanced Shave Formula Pigmentation Repair Formula (age spots) TiO2 Sunblock SPF 30 If you leave off the shave formula, it sure looks like men are concerned about preserving their skin and reversing the signs of aging, doesn't it? Maybe those women's ads are all that's needed to get the message across to the men?

As a man, yes I'm concerned about aging of my skin. I'm critical of products that are a lot of hype and marketing.
I still think there's a large portion of men that don't care or leave all this to a "woman's thing." But times are changing and more men are taking care of their skin.
However, the bottom line to your skin health is diet, sleep and lifestyle (drinking, drugs, smoking, sun).

Of course we want to look our best, no matter our gender. And I agree with you, Joshua, as to your health tips, for a healthy, vibrant us.
My post was in reference to ads targeted toward women, for products that make unrealistic, and often, completely ridiculous claims, as to a product's effectiveness. Contact the FDA, the National Institute of Aging, or any reputable dermatologist, one who does NOT offer a skincare line, and ask what over-the-counter products have been proven to reverse, or halt, the signs of facial skin aging. There are none. Yet companies continue to market their creams and lotions and potions to women, making miracle facial skin anti-aging, facial skin age-reversal, claims. And what costly creams and lotions and potions! One of the newer additions to the ever-growing list is DDF RMX Maximum:

yeah, I don't know what I think about all the "anti-aging" formulas either. I think skin care mostly consits of genes, staying hydrated, sun protection, moisturizing, etc. I've used some of my SO's products before and vica versa...for instance, I used his Crew hair product one time and his deodorant...and he's used my moisturizers and my Burt's Bees Peppermint Soap...it smells great, especially this time of the year <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
But I agree that there are more men's line's coming out these days.

What I really think about all the anti-aging formulas is that the baby boomer generation has gotten to the age where this is exactly the kind of product they're looking for.
Baby boomers don't want to get old, and now that most are in their fifties, they're willing to spend money (lots of it!) on products that promise to turn back time. Companies that manufacture and market these formulas know an opportunity when they see one!
Having said that, I do feel that some of these products can make small differences in appearance. Especially for women with dry skin and lots of dead cells on the surface, improvement can be seen simply from exfoliating and hydrating the skin, which is what many of the products do. The effects are noticeable, but not miraculous, as many of the ads would have you believe, and often temporary.
If you've got deep lines in your face and lots of saggy skin, there's no lotion or potion in the world that's going to fix it for you, just your friendly neighborhood plastic surgeon!
