i found that commercial extremely offensive and i e-mailed them and told them so. of course i got the standard thanks for you intrest blablabla, but it made me so darn mad, i find the same as a lot of you, that some (not all thank god) knitters are stuck up, i actually had a experiance with a person like this. i teach crochet at joanns and i was getting yarn for another project i needed to complete, i saw this lady there with another one looking at yarns, and asking what the diffence is blablabla, well beings as i work for the company, i thought i would ask if they needed help,. i politely asked what they were making, well the one lady says to me that her friends dd is going to crochet her a scarf one of thos fun fur ones, well the other lady snarled and said no she is NOT crocheting you anything. she is KNITTiNG it, crochet is for old ladies, now i am not a terrible young person, but in my late 40's and i took offense to this woman. i told her that knitting was no better than crochet and the same about crochet with knitting, i then told her i thought she was rude to put others down for a art they do, she looked at me like i was crazy, i did not care it made me mad, now i do both, i knit, crochet, tat, cross stitch, paint, also embrodier(sp). the point i made to this person was this, that we all have things we enjoy more than others. like i said i do both but crochet has to be my first choice as i know i can do it better, faster and get more done, but am teaching myself more and more knitting stitches. thanks for listening to me ramble on about a subject which i feel very strong about huggggs

I knit and crochet. When my daughter wanted to learn I taught her how to knit because I thought it was easier, not better. I have crocheted and knitted since I was in grade school. I had not crocheted for sometime and it was hard for me to get the technique back, patterns just didn't come out the way they were suppose to look. I was determined to get the skill back and not ever loose it again so I crocheted and crocheted until I've become comfortable with it again. I always remembered how to knit though, isn't that funny? I know there are knitting snobs out there but then I'm sure there are crochet snobs out there too. I don't know any personally. I don't get offended by their nature because people are people. I figure they are just so sold on knitting or have tried to crochet and can't do it so that is the reason for their reactions to crocheting. As an artist I've heard lots of slams against crafts and how they should not be confused with art. Maybe so but lots of art teachers teach crafts in their classes so where do we draw the line?
I have never felt threatened about crafts. To me crafts are a bridge to get someone to develop talents in a particular area of art. Lots of people don't agree with me.
When a person makes a snide comment about crafts, art, kniting or crocheting then they are basically just telling us that they are intolerarnt aren't they? I figure the World knows them for what they are just from the comments that they make and don't even try and talk them out of it.
I'm going to have to visit your forum Mary Ellen, My grandfather's family came from Ireland. He was the first child in the family born in the United States.
