Last week just 5 days after we moved to our new house when we had so many hopes and dreams planned I fell down the stairs head first after a visit to the bathroom - a long drop. I thought that I was going back into the bedroom and took a step into what I thought was the room only to find myself hurling down the stairs. I may have blacked out for only a short while after I hit my head but I lost my memory for some time......I couldn't remember where I was. I was lucky - I've been told, I've escaped any broken bones but my bruising is awful. I'm left with nausea and dizzy spells at a time when I should be happy in our new home. Anyone out there who has suffered the same who could let me know when the dizziness will cease. I'm panicky about everything now and keep jumping at the slightest noise. My head hurts, I can't think straight and I feel so down.

It sounds like you suffered a pretty major concussion! I'm assuming you went to the ER, since youare sure you don't have any broken bones. Did they do an MRI or CT scan on you?

There's 2 possibilities that jump to mind:
1. Because of the (literally) head over heels tumble, your inner ear might have gotten screwed up, and your equilibrium is thrown totally off. This happened to me once because of an illness, not fall, but I remember being extremely dizzy and off-balance (I even fell off the loo once!), it gave me terrible headaches because it felt like I was constantly ona carousel, AND it made me very nauseous. Anti-vert (or its generic) is the med usually prescribed for this until your body can sort itself out (sometimes a month) - the only problem is it makes you VERY SLEEPY.
2. (This is the one that concerns me), I worry that you may have a small aneurysm or bruise on the brain - which is why I asked about the MRI. The same symptoms, except one night you wake up, are VIOLENTLY ILL, and pass out, and have to be rushed into emergency surgery. This happened to a friend of my mother's. If you did not have a head scan done, GO TO YOUR DOCTOR ASAP, and explain what is going on, and ask to be checked out. This is NOT something you want to take a chance on. And if head trauma is ruled out, then you get the RX for anti-vert, and go beddy-bye for several days! (you probably need a rest after all you've been goin through anyway!) <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for all that Musicalmom. After the awful incident my husband phoned 999 and I was rushed to hospital in an ambulance. I had x-rays done on my neck but no CT scan. They sent me back home again after the Doctor's checks - he was very good I thought. I went along to my local GP yesterday and was told that what I was experiencing was perfectly normal after such a fall. It's been a week now and I'm still feeling a bit dizzy and woozy at times - the bruising is slowly going. I just want to get back to normal! When I go back to my GP next week for a follow up appointment, I'll mention about a CT scan and if I should have had one. Thanks again.

Dear Distressed Mom,

Sounds as if you're healing well. Additional vitamin C can help with the bruising, so can eating a lot more fresh, dark green leafy vegetables (kale and uncooked spinach, e.g.) and fruits.

When you're healed, take steps to enhance balance and prevent future falls. Strenghtening your legs is key to keeping your balance. As is watching where you're going and wearing sneakers or shoes that support you and grip the floor. Always breathe in your abdomen while exercising;
never hold your breath.

Here's some other ideas...

* Get a good book on weightlifting or join a gym, take a Tai Chi class, or take daily 20 minutes walks to build up your strength.

* Gently rock your head from side to side 10 times.

* Pull your shoulders back as if a piece of elastic is pulling your shoulder blades together; hold for 10 seconds and relax. Repeat three times.

* Circle your shoulders three times forward and three times back.

* Tuck in your chin while standing straight. This protects your cervical vertebrae. Repeat three times.

* Go up on your toes as high as possible and come back down Work up to 20 times.

* Hold onto a chair while standing and gently swing one leg back and forth 10 times. Repeat with other leg.

* Stand facing a wall with hands on wall and hells flat. Lean into the wall until you feel a stretch in your calf muscles. Hold for 30 secondes.

* Make circles with your hips in both directions X3.

* Pinch your buttocks together and hold for 5 seconds X10
