[color:"purple"]I have been asked to write some articles on what Hispanic values are. I agreed and have found this a very interesting topic to write about and also I have learned alot about not only myself due to self reflection, but also more about those who are from the Hispanic Culture that are not from the same nationality as I. Why not share what your values as a Hispanic are as well as where you are from? So the topic is, where are you from and what are your values. I want this to include those who are not Hispanic also so please share your values also. It would be kool if those who were not Hispanic would feel free to share what you perceptions are also so we can have an open and safe place to talk about what you thought you knew and learn what you got right and what the truth is on the things you misunderstood. This would go a long way to helping us understand one another and bridge the gap for those who are wanting to know more about Hispanic Culture from the source, Hispanics. heh! So time to weigh in and share, and remember, if you answer bare in mind it might be a youth asking the question. So without further delay...[/color]

Hello,

I'm new to Bella and noticed that this topic didn't really go anywhere. It was a good effort on your part, though. Maybe there aren't enough interested parties in this forum to have an active discourse about Latinos. Hopefully, this too can change. I'm from Honduras but I can't say that my values are specific to Honduras because a large number of them differ greatly from those of my family.

For instance, I really value personal growth. Not only spiritual, but creative and intellectual, as well as physical...the list goes on. My family sometimes finds this difficult to understand and think this approach to life conflicts w/starting a family (one of their MAJOR values). I practice yoga and have spent a lot of time studying dance. They think this is a waste of time.

My grandmother's focus is on cooking, cleaning, church, and spending time w/family and friends. My mother actually veered a bit from the traditional role of women in my family because she went to college. Later she too focused on domestic matters and continues to do so today. I'm the only woman in my family that's not a drop-dead, amazing cook. There are benefits to this, of course. I get to eat a lot of great food:)

Ahh, good food. That's one value I share w/my family. Another is the importance of our relationships in our lives. Though I realize money is important, I've definitely been raised to value people more than the mighty dollar/peso/lempira/sol (chose your currency). I appreciate my family's emphasis on connections. Though we maintain a strict work ethic (another value we share), we place friendships and family ties first.
