Here in California one child is out of school as of this past Friday. My younger son has his last day next Thursday, which also happens to be his ninth birthday.
Both boys will be attending an autism daycamp for six weeks. This is on the campus of a catholic school and fully funded through a Scholarship I appllied for back in March.
The other option is Extended school year (ESY) for my ten year old who is going into the fourth grade. Because he has autism he qualifies for ESY, but it would be to another school at their SDC class. This is not an option for my son to go elsewhere, plus he is fully included in regular education.
My younger son goes to a different school this year where they have year-round schools. They are called tracks, so he has ESY in January for three weeks and nothing over the summer.
They also have an option to go to another school via bus for a summer program.
He will be starting school again the Monday following the camp ending on Friday. This gives my older higher functioning son three weeks to spend with me doing things he likes to do. We can work on manners by going out for lunch, check out a movie and visit pet stores.
What are your plans for your child or children on the Autism Spectrum? Do you plan any road trips? Have you ever taken your son or daughter on a plane? What are their favorite activities? Have you signed up for swimming lessons, tennis lessons - do you visit batting cages, miniature golf parks?
My boys enjoy going to the Zoo. Over Spring Break we went to Sea World via Amtrak. I highly recommend train travel for a child with autism. I paid the higher rate for business class - what a pleasure it was. We had a portable DVD player, toys and snacks.
